The Famous charming 13th century arcaded Monday Market of Mirepoix must not be missed. 5 minutes drive away Mirepoix has the finest example of a Medieval Square in all of France. Other destinations within 30 mins/ 40 mins drive are Cathar Country (The striking Cathar fortress at Montségur sits among the peaks), Monseigur, Carcasonne and Le Cite, World Heritage Site, setting of the top selling book Labyrinth. Lac Montbel is approximately 20 mins away where you can swim, sail, enjoy pedalos. Beautiful Toulouse is an easy hour away as is Narbonne on the Mediterranean; skiing at Mont D-Olmes can be enjoyed at the same distance. amazing continental climate, hot summers, cold winters with skiing nearby.
Prehistoric cave paintings at Niaux and Mas d’Azil and the underground river at Labouiche are great activities nearby.

Mirepoix / Larche area
Mirepoix has all the amenities you could require within 5 min drive. Amazing medieval covered timbered . walkways dating from the 13th century.and its famous Monday market. During the summer months there are many fetes, A Medieval Festival,,jazz festival at Easter. Many evening markets with local artisans. A Cathedral with the widest unsupported nave in France. A wide variety of restaurants. Activities abound in the local area with lots of designated footpaths. Horse riding, tennis, sailing, swimming, cycling, white-water rafting and all sporting activities are available in the area. At nearby Foix there is the largest underground navigable river in Europe. The area has some amazing birds including the rare Bee-eater which nests in the Mirepoix basin. You can see many types of birds of prey. There are plenty of rivers for fishing enthusiasts. The famous Cathar castles including Monsegur are all within driving distance. The famous Renne le Chateau is about an hour away.
How to get there
Approximately 40kms form Carcassonne or Toulouse, both of which service EasyJet and numerous other airline companies. There are many car hire options from both airports.
A nice drive from both nearby major airports can take you through scenic towns.
