The Midi-Pyrenees / Ariege region
Set between Toulouse ( known as the Pink City because of the type of stone used in many of the buildings) and Carcassonne guests can benefit from visiting France's 4th city and touring the ancient Cathar routes - recently made famous by Kate Mosse's novel, the Labrynth.
The beautiful walled city of Carcassonne is the capital of our neighbouring departement of Aude and forms part of the wine region of Languedoc-Rousillion. Most Domaines offer wine tasting sessions to tempt the palate.
The Ariege is without a doubt the perfect destination for those who love nature, mountains and all outdoor pursuits such as horse-riding, walking, sailing and bird watching. The capital town of Foix is 20 mins away with its cobbled streets, 10th century castle and wonderful array of shops and bars.
Other places of interest are the towns of Mirepoix (10 mins away) a medieval town with an exciting Monday market and a great choice of bars and restaurants. Pamiers (15mins away) is very pretty and has everything you need from banks to shops to restaurants to a bowling alley and even a cinema
A visit to the Mediterranean would only take 1½hrs (Narbonne plage) as would a day's excursion to the independant state of Andorra. Here guests can indulge in tax free shopping on luxury goods such as perfume, electronic items and spirits.
Mirepoix area
Rieucros is truly a sleepy, rural village with an historic interest. The property is the last house in the village with its land sitting behind, permitting visitors to benefit from village life on the one hand and the seclusion of surrounding terrain on the other.
The church in the heart of the village still has church bells chiming every hour. There is an Auberge/bar, post office, 2 general stores, a petrol station and even a pottery, specialising in fine ceramics. The communal tennis court is available for use – free of charge. And just 2 doors away from the farmhouse is a boulangerie/general store - ideal for morning baguettes and croissants!
Rieucros was important in WW2 as many of the French Resistance from the parachute division lived and operated out of the village, using the nearby forests and mountains to evacuate refugees into Spain. Today many of their relatives still reside in the village and there are commemorative plaques on several of the houses and roads named in honour of these unsung heroes.
Rieucros is equal distance from Pamiers – the historic Market town of Ariège – and the stunning medieval town of Mirepoix with it’s delightful main square surrounded by half beamed houses and shops (both approx 10 mins by car). In Pamiers you’ll find every imaginable amenity ranging from restaurants and bars, banks, supermarkets and boutiques. Apart from its architecture and cathedral, Mirepoix is renowned for its local market held every Monday morning.
Nestling in the foothills of the Pyrenees this destination is a must for nature-lovers: horse riding, walking, mountain climbing, fishing (in our river during season), cycling (Tour de France passes through Ariege every year), sailing, rafting, flying (local aerodrome les Pujols), historic tours of Cathar routes/monuments, go-karting, pre-historic caves and gorges and most of our independant small farms sell their produce (goat's and ewe's cheese, vegetable, fruit and jams).
During July and August each village has its own fete which usually entails plenty of dancing and drinking and is free!
During the winter months guest can ski at Ax les 3 domaines - just 1 hour from the property.
