Renovated barn on hillside in Senesse-de Senabugue, a delightful small farming village in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Set in 1/2 acre of land, with large south facing decking terrace overlooking valley and wooded hills beyond.

The house includes a large main floor , origninally used to house the carts of the farm across the road, and to bake bread in the oven, still attached to the building. Renovation was carried out tastefully in the 1990s by an American artist who was inspired by the area. The interior includes the original stonework, high exposed wooden roof frame, wooden floors and a very large open plan kitchen/dining/sitting area (approximately 70 square metres). An efficient wood burning stove provides heating for this area with the rest of the house heated by recently installed radiators.

Many artists, musicians, writers stay in the region. The location is ideal for relaxation, walking in the surrounding hills, trips to the neighbouring Cathar castles, swimming and sailing on lac de Montbel, horse riding at riding stable nearby.

The town of Mirepoix, a 10-minute drive away, is lively and offers exceptional medieval architecture. Two busy weekly markets are held there, and the town has a large number of restaurants, bars and shops. Many musical and social events are organized throughout the spring and summer season.

The great medieval fortress and town of Carcassonne, only 45 minutes away, is an ideal day trip destination.

2 supermarkets at Mirepoix offer ample shopping potential for local produce and food..

The Midi-Pyrenees region

Midi Pyrénées borders on the Auvergne to the north, Aquitaine to the west, and Languedoc Roussillon to the east. Its southern boundary is the Spanish and Andorran border.

Apart from walking, the scenery and peaceful ambiance is enjoyed by artists, musicians, writers, birdwatchers, cyclists, naturalists, horse riders, and by those who simply want a change of pace. There is a local airfield at Les Pujols which offers parachute jumping and bapteme de l'air for first time flyers.

This region has a tradition of strong individuality, often defended by hard fighting, as countless castles testify. This survives in the great local tradition of Rugby. French Rugby was born here, and the region still boasts its strongest exponents. From the high peaks of the Pyrenees, home of the brown bear and the wolf, to the sunny curves of the Canal du Midi, every variety of scenery is there to be enjoyed, from the most dramatic to the most relaxing.

The local population is largely involved in farming and are willing to share their traditions with visitors making them feel welcome.

Local delicacies include cassoulet, liver sausage, cow and ewe cheeses, Corbières and Limoux wines.

The Mirepoix region is ideally situated between the high peaks of the Pyrenees to the south - ski slopes are only 30 km at les Monts d'Olmes - and the gentle rolling hills of the Lauragais and Toulouse areas to the north. Wild, unspoilt scenery is to be enjoyed on walks along many maintained footpaths, or simply exploring the open countryside.

This region offers relaxation at a different pace of life but within easy reach of busy market towns, impressive gorges and mountain scenery. The fascinating local history stretches from the neolthic cave paintings of grotte de Niaux to the Cathar castles of Montségur, Roquefixade and Montaillou which are breathtaking landmarks less than 20km to the south.

Mirepoix is one of the best preserved bastides with unusual wooden covered passages in the central square which is buzzing with activity with its local markets, music festivals, art galleries and local festivals.

Great one day trips can be to Andorra, to the Mediterranean sea, to Carcassonne and to Toulouse to mention a few.
