The Midi-Pyrenees region

In the heart of the South West the eight departments of the Midi-Pyrenees form the biggest region in France. Boasting varied landscapes, the region of the Midi-Pyrenees is packed with many features with natural and architectural gems to fantastic traditions and gastronomy. Foix is in the Ariege region of the Midi-Pyrenees. It is steeped in history and the scenery is just stunning. The climate is very good with little rain. Long hot summers, majestic colours adorn the mountains in autumn and the snow peaks of winter like icing on a cake.

The region is part of the Cathar legends so popular in several best sellers and the Tour de France visits every year. Andorra for duty free shopping and a spectacular drive is about an hours drive and the Ville Rose, Toulouse is also an hour away by car or rail. There are chateaux, museums, beautiful medieval sites, and always the wonderful mountains to explore

Mirepoix

Camon is a beautiful fortified village with a general store, cafe, post office and church. It is only 10 mins from Mirepoix. The river Hers runs past the village and there are lots of walks directly from the house around the village along by the river and further afield. In Spring and summer, the village tourist office organises small-scale events: the Rose Festival in May (there is a climbing rose bush in front of every house, including this one), BBQs and story-telling by the river, open-air silent cinema and puppet shows, guided walks....and in August there is the inevitable three-day village fete.

There are two lakes very close to Camon which are perfect for family outings and swimming. In addition Base nautical in Mercus (40 mins away) is a beautiful water sports base for water skiing, knee boarding or monoskis. There are Mediterranean Waterparks situated in Narbonne- Espace Liberte, Port Leucate- Aquatic Park, and Saint Cyprien- Aqualand. So no matter what your interest you are sure to find something new to do every day.

Camon is situated in an area known as the 'Pays Cathare', famous for its Cathar castles and history. The Chateau in Chalbre which is only 10 mins away from Camon hosts jousting exhibitions with knights on horseback, teaches children how to write with a quill and exhibits toys of the age which children are encouraged to enjoy.

Places to go are Mirepoix which is a bastide town with mediaeval arcades. A large market is held there every Monday. Montsegur made famous by the Davinci Code is 30 mins away. Lac de Montbel and Lac de Puivert are 30 and 15 mins away and provide swimming, sailing, fishing and bird watching. Further afield are Carcassonne (45 mins) and the Pyrenees (40 mins) and Languedoc Mediterranean coastal resorts are only 75mins away.

"fairytale surroundings with every mod con available to ensure a superb holiday"

The locatiojn and accommodation can can only be described as magical. We had our 7yr old daughter with us and she was extremely excited with the location of her bedroom at mezanine level. Spotless accommodation with all mod cons and more availalbe for use.
A car is definitely required to explore the wonderful towns and scenery this particular area in France has to offer. We spent many a wonderful day relaxing by the lake in Puivert. Although Camon itself is quiet, it has so much to offer with the Chateau next door to your accommodation and making a reservatioj to dine is a must...what a treat.

We cannot wait to return to what we can only describe as probably our most favourite location/holiday to date.

"Excellent"

The house is absolutely superb with all the amenities required. It's furnished excellently and is incredibly comfortable. The area of Camon is gorgeous with stunning views, a great trail for walking along the river and if you're looking for peace and quiet you couldn't ask for more.

With Mirepoix only a 10 min drive away you have the opportunity to sit in one of the cafe's and watch the world go by while enjoying some coffee and fresh pastries. It also has a nice selection of restaurants to choose from. The supermarket that is located in Mirepoix stocks everything you would need while on holiday including, food, drink, clothes and toiletries. If you're looking to have a treat in terms of dinner, Chateau De Camon which is located directly behind the house is well worth a visit and boasts superb cuisine.

Carcassonne is also only about 40 mins away and La Cite is well worth a visit also. With surrounding lakes and the midi-pyrennees near by, this is the ideal location for anyone looking to get away for a weekend or a week and refresh. Ideal for couples and families, particularly as there is a master bedroom with 1 bed and a loft with 2 beds for children.
