The Midi-Pyrenees / Ariege region

Situated in a peaceful village location in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains on the border of Languedoc and Ariège in the South West of France, the area is a calm and peaceful refuge. The village has about 10 well maintained family homes, some ancient barns, a recently restored 12th century chapel and graveyard, village tennis court and football pitch. The village is scattered with lovingly tended flowerbeds and vintage streetlamps. It is extremely peaceful as there is very little road traffic.
The surrounding fields and meadows are invariably dusted with snow in winter and in summer they seem to overflow with sunflowers. There are many lovely walks to be enjoyed straight from the front door (from day long trecks into the hills towards neighbouring hamlets or just gentle strolls around the village). Mirepoix is approximately (10 km) from the house with its Medieval centre, Cathedral, shops and excellent restaurants. For day trips, the house is within reach of the Mediterranean coast, Pyrenees, Andorra & Northern Spain.
The Mirepoix area
Le Mas Du Plantaurel is near Mirepoix (10km) a beautiful medieval town where you will find all amenities. Mirepoix is a hive of all sort of activities, all year round. Mirepoix has a fabulous market on Monday mornings and hosts many festivals (marionettes, the apple fair) and craft fairs throughout the year. Th house is in the heart of the Cathar region near many interesting historical sites (Montsegur, Puivert, Camon, Lagarde). There are lots of great restaurants and sport activities nearby (International go-karting, horse riding, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, sky diving...skiing in the winter) and during summer there are many characterful french summer village parties with the traditional music and very good bands. The climate in summer is generally hot and dry like Carcassonne. During the winter it gets very cold and snows.

Guestbook for Le Mas Du Plantaurel
J Douglas, England, July 2010
Just a small note of thanks, we had a wonderful time at the gite the only complaint being that we didn't have more time off work to stay a little longer. After a shaky start the weather picked up and was a glorious 36 degrees by Saturday. We managed to cover Rennes le chateau, Puivert Chateau, the caves at Ornalac, Arques Chateau, Carcassonne, Mirepoix, a picnic on the Canal Du Midi followed by a visit to a cave du vin recommended by my sister-in-law (left a card on your notice board) and a climb to the top of Montsegur aswell as a couple of local walks.

Just back from the Farmhouse and wanted to let you know how very lovely our break was.
For the first day or so the utter stillness was an enigma, but we quickly adapted and came to love it, we all admire the sympathetic way you have restored the house, it is beautiful and walking through the village we can see why you have adopted there. Your lovely neighbour brought us tomatoes, it is like England was years ago isnt it?
T Bourgonjon, Belgium, September 2010

I must say your home is truly perfect ...
I have passed your website to my colleagues at work. Me think that there are a few seriously consider you to go home. I'm looking to come back next year!
