Home description
In the lovely courtyard of an elegant wine-maker's house, in the pretty village of Mirepeisset just a 1/2 hour away from the Mediterranean coast, is Maison Tourterelle, an attractive 3 bedroom holiday home sleeping 6 people in comfort.
Converted from an ancient wine cave, the house is furnished to a high standard and has a spacious beamed living room. It stands next door to the owners' property but is completely separate and has its own terrace. In the courtyard there is safe parking for your car.
The house has 3 bedrooms with one en-suite and a large family bathroom. There is a terrace for your personal use, shaded in part from the hot sun - there's even a small herb garden for fresh herbs when cooking! The entire garden, together with the large swimming pool is for your use. The friendly owners who live next door have a totally separate terrace area, screened from Maison Tourterelle - and will only use the pool area when you are out sight-seeing.
The property is situated on the edge of Mirepeisset, a very attractive village with 2 restaurants and a small grocers/bakers. Within walking distance are another four restaurants and there's a supermarket and petrol station only 1 mile away.
Mirepeisset's medieval ramparts and gateway still remain standing guard over the beautiful River Cesse - a clear-water river where you can swim - in fact the name Mirepeisset is an Occitan name meaning ''see the little fishes''. Narbonne and the Mediterranean beaches are but a short drive away as is the fascinating medieval fortress town of Carcassonne. This is a great base for sight-seeing in this beautiful region.
What is very special about this property is the care and attention given by the owners to ensure your comfort and the pleasantness of your surroundings with a beautifully maintained house, courtyard and garden, and quality garden and interior furniture. You are sure to enjoy your stay here!

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
This part of the Languedoc has a sunny Mediterranean climate. It can be hot in summer, but the temperature is often tempered by a breeze. Now the 3rd most visited region in France by British people, the Languedoc offers something for everyone. Miles of long, sandy beaches, coastal lagoons, vibrant cities such as Narbonne and Montpellier, historical sites such as Carcassonne and the Cathar castles, fabulous scenery, great cuisine and vineyards, vineyards, vineyards.
Mirepeisset area
The local village of Mirepeisset dates back from Roman times and its medieval ramparts, gateway and aqueduct remain today. The village nestles in the Minervois vineyards and is very close to the River Cesse which, in the summer, is dammed to create a clear water pool for swimming. Nearby is a picnic area with tables and barbeques. There's also tennis and basketball courts, a play area with swings and a pizza restaurant beside the River Cesse. The village has a small boulangerie and grocers for your morning croissants and small provisions.
Sports facilities - as well as the swimming pool at Maison Tourterelle, you can swim in the River Cesse. Horse-riding is also available in the village. All types of water sports are available on the Mediterranean coast, including sailing, wind-surfing, water ski-ing. You can play golf at Beziers and at Carcassonne - both about 30 minutes drive. This is a great area too for walking and cycling. Bicycles can be hired locally and delivered to your door - just ask us for details.
This is a fantastic base for exploring and sight-seeing in this lovely region. Narbonne is just 20 minute drive away - a thriving sea port in Roman times, but now inland, it has a beautiful cathedral and central square - lots of cafes and independent shops in the narrow streets which run either side of the Canal de la Robine. Ten minutes further on from Narbonne is the seaside town of Narbonne Plage with its fine, sandy beach and also the quaint, interesting fishing village of Gruissan.
Locally, you can walk by the side of the Canal du Midi, busy with passing boats, and discover the interesting canal architecture in the nearby village of Le Somail. In less than half an hour by car, and to the North, you'll find the mountainous region of the Haut Languedoc. To the South, the Cote de Vermeille and the Spanish border is about an hour and a half's drive.
Markets are colourful here and full of local, seasonal produce - near to Mirepeisset you'll find one at Olonzac on a Tuesday morning, Lezignan Corbieres on a Wednesday morning, Beziers on a Friday, and Narbonne on a Thursday and Sunday. Narbonne also has a fantastic indoor market daily in Les Halles - well worth a visit.
Restaurants - Mirepeisset has 2 restaurants and there are several others by the side of the Canal du Midi in the neighbouring village of Le Somail. There are many other restaurants too in other local villages to suit all budgets and tastes - some serving Catalan dishes.
Supermarket - You’ll find the nearest supermarket at St Marcel sur Aude just 1 mile away.

Guestbook
The location was great and the house well-stocked with all the necessities, including toys for children. The property is private with good parking, and the garden and pool area is superb. The hosts were very welcoming and added value to our holiday in the region overall with their very helpful local knowledge. The village is lovely and quiet. Mr and Mrs C, Australia, June 2008.
