The Central-West Brazil region

The Brazilian West Central region is composed of the states of Goias, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul and Brasilia where Brazil's national capital, Brasilia, is situated.

1978 the Governator divided the State Mato Grosso into tow states: Mato Grosso with the capital Cuiaba and Mato Grosso do Sul with the capital Campo Grande. 75% of the Pantanal (Wetlands) is located in the state Mato Grosso do Sul.

Mato Grosso do Sul occupies an area of 357,140 km² but is home to only about 2.4 million inhabitants. It is one of the least densely populated areas in Brazil with only 6.9 inhabitants/km² (2010). One of the reasons for this is the fact that over one third of the state is marshy floodland called Pantanal.

We are situated in the Pantanal between the Hills of the Serra Maracaju and Bodoquena, 15 km out of the small town Miranda which is the oldest town of the state Mato Grosso do Sul where its possible to see a lot of toucansâ??, red macaws, parrots, cappuccino monkeys.

Then we are close to Bonito, the clear river water paradise for who would like to explore this beautiful rivers, caves and waterfalls.

Miranda

Pantanal means marshland. It encompasses an ecological paradise of around 240 000 km2 with a rich and varied flora & fauna set on an unspoiled fluvial landscape. Although the Amazon is more famous, the Pantanal is a better place to see wildlife. It is flat and there are large, wide open spaces, making wildlife more visible and easier to hear. The Pantanal has one of the greatest fauna & flora in the world.

Flora and Fauna

More than 650 species of birds permanently live in this unique natural paradise â?? more species than in the whole of Europe. From March around 120 species migrate here to breed, and every year ornithologists discover new types. The best known examples are toucans, the red-fronted and hyacinth macaws, the Tujuju or Jaburu storks, as the symbols of the Pantanal. You can get the chance to listen to the delightful birdsongs and observe the many splendid species. The best time to see birds is between March and October.

More than 80 different mammals live here; the best known is the jaguar. It is the worldâ??s third-largest predator. The puma, the second smallest big cat, lives in the Pantanal too. You will certainly be able to see capybaras, howling or Capuchin monkeys, foxes, South American agutis, racoons, peccaries, giant otters, anteaters, armadillos and various types of deer.

Some 50 species of reptiles share the swampland too â?? the best known are the cayman and anaconda. In fact, there are plenty of alligators, lizards and different kinds of frogs to amaze you! The dry season is the best time to see anacondas.

Around 280 species of fish inhabit the waters; there are 20 different types of piranha alone. The dourado (1 m) and jau (1.50 m, up to 120 kg) are widely eaten. On our snorkelling expeditions we will show you skates, piraputangas, dourado and much more. Of course you will get the chance to fish for piranha, piraputanga and carp on our boat trips.

A host of insects such as butterflies, moths, beetles, mosquitoes, ants and termites also live here. By the way, outbreaks of malaria and dengue fever have not been recorded in the Pantanal for years, and with a good mosquito spray you will be able to really enjoy the enormous variety on offer.

The Pantanal is home to at least 2,000 plant species, including medicinal and otherwise useful varieties used by the native population. We would like to impart our knowledge to you about the most important medicinal plants, if desired, and present you with various teas, plant extracts and individual cures.
