The Swiss Alps region

The southernmost canton of Switzerland, with its mild Mediterranean climate, relaxed lifestyle and Italian flair, is a popular holiday destination. There is so much to discover, experience and worth visiting Ticino. There is something there for everyone and every age.

The Lago Maggiore region offers you beautiful, comfortable and cosy lidos, wonderful natural beaches and grassy banks where you can lay down and get tanned or read a good book. The very clean lake and rivers means that Ticino is a much sough after bathing destination. But what else is there to do? Well you can go fishing, rent a boat, stroll along the lake shores, eat out at many of the gourmet restaurants, sip a drink at terraces, go walking/cycling/hiking or try parasailing.

It you aspire something a little less exhausting, there's also many beautiful castles to visit, musea, art galleries and nice shops. And with Italy at your feet, there's also the North of Italy to discover with Milan at only 1 hr and 15 mins away.

Ascona

Ascona is often called the "Pearl of Lake Maggiore" for its cultural heritage as well as for its touristic offer. It is the most ideally located holiday resort on Lake Maggiore and has a wide choice of restaurants. Its artistic and cultural heritage, dating from the middle ages and the renaissance, is still very much alive in the old centre of the little town, called "borgo". Ascona, with a population of about 4500, developed around its historical centre and offers a wide choice of exclusive shops, boutiques, museums, art galleries and antique shops. It hosts many important cultural events, including JazzAscona, a major jazz festival renowned worldwide.

Locarno

As early as in the Imperial Roman period, Locarno was a holiday resort. Towards the end of the 11th century, Locarno was the most important town on Lake Maggiore but in the course of the 16th century this prosperous period came to an end but at the start of 1900 with its consequent building of beautiful Belle-Époque-style hotels, Locarno became the most charming town in Ticino with its string of shops and cafés along the Piazza Grande. Nowadays the most important event must surely be the International Film Festival, one of the Top Events of Switzerland, which manages to transform Locarno into a cultural metropolis where the young and fashionable predominate, and which converts Piazza Grande into the "most beautiful movie theatre in the world". And in July a star-spangled 'Moon and Stars' festival features world renowned pop artists on the Piazza Grande... as must see if you are in Ticino!

Cardada/Cimetta Mountain

At Locarno you start travelling with the funicolar, whereafter at Orselina, near the church Madonna del Sasso, you find the cableway to Cardada. Here you have peace, nature, wonderful walks and excursions. The view over Lake Maggiore is overwhelming and unforgettable. If you wish to go any higher, a two-seater chairlift leads from Cardada to Cimetta, offering guests the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking view during their ride. At the highest point in Cimetta you have a 360° panoramic view from the Maggia river delta between Locarno and Ascona, the lowest point of Switzerland, to the Monte Rosa massif, the highest point of Switzerland. There are 2 Helsana running walking trails, 1 orienteering for children, 1 orienteering for adults, mountain bike trail, paragliding and a foot sole massage path.

Brissago Islands

A visit to the botanical gardens on the Islands of Brissago is a must for anyone staying in the region. The gardens bring together a great variety of exotic, subtropical plants, cultivated in the open air and laid out according to their geographical origins.

Vallemaggia

With its unique landscape, the Maggia valley offers 800 km of hiking up to the mountain peaks and glaciers, past crystal clear mountain lakes, stone bridges and villages where time seems to have stood still. In summer, a swim in the crystal clear Maggia is wonderfully refreshing.

Centovalli

A ride on the Centovalli Railway is an unforgettable experience. From Locarno, passing through deep gorges and raging waterfalls, it is about 1.5 hr before reaching lovely Domodossola in Italy. If you wish you also continue by train to Stresa, and take the ferry back over Lago Maggiore... A wonderful and relaxing day trip.

Verzasca Valley

The Verzasca valley is wonderful for hiking but very famous for its dam, featuring in 007's Golden Eye movie. Just seeing the dam is worth the trip, and in the summer there is daily bungee jumping, for the courageous amongst us!

Markets in Ticino & Italy

Shopping at the weekly markets around Lago Maggiore has a very special appeal and offer everything you need (or may not need). Think plenty of clothes, shoes, meat & meat products, fish, cheese, vegetables and fruit. Definitely very interesting to visit.

Market in Luino (Italy) - Wednesdays from 9-16 hours, (all year)

Market in Ascona - Tuesdays from 10-17 hours

Market in Canobbio (Italy) - Sundays from 8-13 hours

Market in Intra (Italy) - Saturdays 9-16 hours

Market in Locarno - Thursdays 9-17 hours
