The Lazio region
The region of Lazio is rich of culture and nature and located in the center of Italy.
Hilly landscapes with olive- and vine cultivation and the two seas Bracciano and Bolzena characterizes the north of Lazio. The culturally heydays are the famous Etruscan excavation site and the hot sulfur-wells, where you can spoil your skin under the open sky - relax yourself!
Rome is the cultural and economic center of Lazio and the capital city of Italy.
Mountains are in the south of Lazio, rising in a highest up to 2000 meters. At the lower sites are the lovely green hilly landscape, overgrown by orange-and lemon trees as well as olive-and vine cultivation. The coastal side is marked by very varied scenic pictures: little bays, steep coast, long sandy beaches and the green hills covered by typical Mediterranean plants (macchia mediterranea).
Archaeological excavation from the Roman time and the pre-Roman time (Etruscan, Ausonia and Aurunci), medieval town centers, monasteries and convents, small picturesque fishing villages and characteristically villages in the mountains have formative influences to this region.
Lazio has many nature reserves and little protected oasis and is a very beautiful region for short walks, long hiking tours or trekking and excursions.
Thermal bathes/springs are to find in Viterbo, Tivoli, Fiuggi and Suio.
You can get fresh fish and sea food in all varieties every day; it is a specialty of the coastal region as well as rustically cuisine interior (meat and sausage, cheese and a lot of different vegetables).
The buffalo mozzarella and the olives of Gaeta are an exceptionally culinary specialty of this region.
Campania is located in the south of Italy by the Tyrrhenian Sea. Naples is the cultural centre, an attractive and lively Mediterranean seaport at the Gulf of Naples with mild climate and fantastic position at the feet of the Vesuvius. A turbulent history and many objects of interest have drawn many tourists from all over the world since the 18th century. The UNESCO has declared the old town of Naples to a world cultural heritage: the narrow alleys lead us to mysterious churches, catacombs and subterranean caves. The old Neapolitan ethnic group reveals to the tourists even today; a visit between handmade arts and crafts, fluttered washings and shouting fish dealers. Naples is surrounded by the hills of the Vomero and towered above from the amazing castle Castello S. Elmo. From this place you have a fantastic view down the city, to the Vesuvius and towards the sea. You should absolutely taste the local pizza, because pizza is invented here in this region! The genuine Neapolitan cooking presents delicious pasta dishes, fish and seafood in a great variety.
The Amalfi Coast is situated at the south of Naples, an amazing picturesque landscape with small roads, typical fishing villages, beautiful churches (the architecture has an Arabic character) and steep coast - the air is filled with lovely fragrance of lemon. Very aromatic and delicious is the liqueur Limoncello, made of lemons from lemon trees around.
The culturally heydays are the world-famous cities Pompeii and Herculaneum, the temple of Paestum and the royal palace of Caserta.
The way up to the even today active volcano Vesuvius is an absolutely must for people loving nature. The national park Cilento presents a virgin countryside, traditional villages in the mountains, fine sandy beaches with clear water and picturesque fishing villages. This place is very beautiful, fantastic and really worth a visit.
Another specialty besides the world-famous pizza and the Limoncello is the buffalo mozzarella, produced in the north of Campania.
Scauri is the biggest district of the local government of Minturno (8.000 inhabitants). Scauri is a seaside resort at the foot of the Aurunci Mountains (Petrella 1533m), surrounded by hills, overgrown with typical Mediterranean bushes, trees and plants.
About 4 km sandy beaches, surrounded by two green hills (the Golden and the Silver Mountain), invites for swimming, sunbathes, relaxation and walks. A very romantic place is the beach of Spiaggia dei Sassolini, a small bay for relaxation in a quiet place, away from the daily sounds of the town or you can visit an oasis from the WWF in the nature reserve Riviera di Ulisse. The nature reserve invites for walks and you can explore around the ruins of the old Roman Villa Mamurra (1 century BC).
You can admire the ruins of the antique Roman Minturnae and the amphitheater at the legendary Via Appia; there are to visit open-air-events like concerts, theatre or dance-performance in summer.
Ruins of the antique Scauri (then Pirae; the time of the Aurunci nation) you can find in the old center of the town, close to the swimming area Lido die Pini; one piece of the megalithic city wall is in a very good condition today.
A great variety of restaurants you can find in Scauri and vicinity: from the simple pizzeria over genuine restaurants with a good local cooking to gourmet restaurants and pubs. Live-music is often given at the Maryen place, at the Scolio or in the pub Mary Rock. The Mary Rock is an open-air-pub, situated in a very romantically bay directly at the sea, open only in the summer months.

Minturno is an old town with typical medieval town center; those are mostly to find in the south of Italy: small and winding alleys and steps, arches, many flowers and plants, old churches. Minturno is located at the foot of the gigantic Aurunci Mountains, built on a hill, rising upon the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Worth to seen are the medieval churches of San Pietro, Santissima Annunziata and San Francesco and, of course, the medieval castle. A Christmas market with arts and crafts and an exhibition of Christmas cribs are taking place in the medieval castle every year at Christmas time.
To become acquainted with the town it is advisable to make a round through the small alleys of the old town: first walk along the main street, then turn right and just follow the little bit dark arches of the old city wall.
The ruins of the elder town of Minturnae are to visit at the legendary Via Appia near the river Garigliano. The origins of the antique Minturnae are going back to the Aurunci people. In the year 340 BC Chr. they were defied by the Romans. Nowadays, you can admire the ruins of the antique Roman Minturnae and the Amphitheatre. In summer there are many theatre shows, music- and dance performances to visit. A little museum in the town exhibits arts and excavated foundations like statues, inscriptions and things like old tools and vases visitors can take a look at the findings of the excavations.
The small medieval villages Tremensuoli, Santa Maria Infante, Pulcherini and Tufo are scattered in the lovely green hilly landscape around Minturno. The touristic districts of the bathing towns Scauri and Marina di Minturno are located next to the sea.
Down the valley, you will reach the railway station of Minturno-Scauri and the sea/beach - 4 km sandy beaches, swimming areas with free beach and those with Lidos where you can hire out sunshades and sun beds, do sport like sailing, windsurfing or Kite surf... The small romantically bay of Spiaggia dei Sassolini with stony beach is a quiet and peaceful place for people seeking relaxation apart of the normal daily sounds and noises of a town.
