Enquire nowThe Lazio region
The region of Lazio, rich of culture and nature, is situated in the centre of Italy.
Hill landscapes with olive- and vine cultivation and the seas Bracciano and Bolzena characterizes the north of Lazio. The culturally heydays are the famous Etruscan excavation and the sulphur-wells, where you can spoil your skin under the open sky.
Rome is the culturally and economically centre directly in the heartland of Lazio and the capital city of Italy.
Mountains are in the south of Latium, rising above 2000 meters; at the lower sites are green hill landscapes, overgrown with orange-and lemon trees and olive-and vine cultivation. The coast is very varied: you can find little bays, steep coast, long sandy beaches and hills covered with Mediterranean plants (macchia mediterranea).
Excavations from the Roman time and the pre-Roman time (Etruscan, Ausoner, Aurunci), medieval towns, monasteries and convents, small fishing villages and characteristically villages in the mountains have formative influences to this region.
Lazio has many nature reserves and little protected oasis; very beautiful for walks, longer walking tours or trekking.
Thermal springs are to find in the region of Viterbo, Tivoli, Fiuggi and in the south in Suio.
Fish and seafood you can get in all varieties as a speciality at the coast; a rustically cuisine interior (meat and sausage, cheese and a lot of different vegetables).
The buffalo mozzarella and the olives of Gaeta are an exceptionally culinary speciality.
The Minturno / Marina di Minturno area
Minturno is an old town with a genuine and medieval centre, those you will mostly find in the south of Italy: small and winding alleys and steps, arches, many flowers and old churches. The city is located at the foot of the gigantic Aurunci Mountains, build on a hill, which is raising the Tyrrhenian Sea.
It's worth to see the medieval church San Pietro, Santissima Annunziata and San Francesco and, of course, the medieval castle. A Christmas market with arts and crafts and an exhibition of Christmas cribs are taking place at Christmas time in the medieval castle.
To become acquainted with the town it is advisable to make a round through the small alleys of the old town: along the main street, then turning right and just following the little bit dark arches of the old city wall.
The ruins of the elder town of Minturnae are located at the legendary Via Appia near the river Garigliano. The origins of the antique Minturnae are going back to the Aurunci people. In the year 340 BC Chr. they were defied by the Romans. Nowadays, you can admire the ruins of the antique Roman Minturnae and the amphitheatre where in summer you can visit theatre shows, music- and dance performances. In a little museum with statues, inscriptions and things like old tools and vases visitors can take a look at the findings of the excavations.
The small medieval villages Tremensuoli, Santa Maria Infante, Pulcherini and Tufo, surrounded by green hills, are located around the town Minturno. The touristic districts of the small towns Scauri and Marina Di Minturno are located next to the sea.
Driving down to the valley, you will reach the railway station of Minturno-Scauri and the sea/beach. By the sea-side you will find a 4 kilometre long sandy beach with swimming areas where you can rent sunshades or doing sports like sailing, windsurfing or cite surfing. A very romantic place is the bay of Spiaggia dei Sassolini. It is a small stoned beach where you can relax in a quiet place, away from the daily sounds of the town. At the Pub Mary Rock you can enjoy by candle light and sometimes with live music the mild breezes from the sea in the evenings.
Minturno is an optimal starting point for daily trips to the cities Rome, Neapel, Pompeii, Caserta, Vesuvio, Monte Cassino, the islands, the mountains, the archaeological excavations, monasteries, converts and spa-towns.
Spare time in Minturno:
-swimming, sailing and sailing curses, windsurfing, cite surfing, water skiing, lending out pedal boats, lending out bicycles, snorkelling in the nature reserve, fishing, rollerblading, mountain biking, playing basketball, playing tennis, horse riding
