The Heart of England / Peak District / Shropshire region
Shropshire delights with its variety. Whether strolling by the river in medieval Shrewsbury, exploring the castle, and fine dining of Ludlow or discovering delightful Church Stretton, Bridgnorth or Bishops Castle, you can be assured of plenty to see and sample. Even the museums and attractions are wide ranging; from the industrial investigations(we are at the centre of Britains original lead industry dating back to Roman times) to ecologically informative nature centres, and even the chance to step back in time and visit a working Victorian village at Iron Bridge and the working Victorian farm at Acton Scott. Mitchells Fold bronze age circle is a stroll away, as is Wales Cornden Hill.
Take a walk along the legendary purple Stiperstones which are visible from your window, explore the Long Mynd or venture to Clee HIll, Wenlock Edge - the list is almost endless. Even the landscape alters, with the moorland scenery of the Long Mynd, craggy outcrops of Stiperstones and the hills and valleys of Wales all hosting an amazing variety of wildlife.
The Minsterley / Shelve area
The Bog visitor centre is renown for its cake and information on the local area, with both Fenny Bank and Mucklewick Walks joinable out of the door. Snailbeach has the most extensive remains of the old lead and barytes mining industry with weekend tours.
Bishops Castle hosts a market every Friday, and various fairs through the year including Michaelmas Fayre. Clun has the Green Man Festival in May while Shrewsbury flower festival in August, and the Darwin festival in February attract worldwide visitors.
Welshpool, Montgomery, and other Marches towns are within an easy drive - as are a variety of historic properties such as Stokesay Castle (EH), Attingham Park (NT), Powis Castle (NT) or Wroxeter Roman Village (EH)
Regular buses to Bishops Castle and Shrewsbury are a short walk. There are a variety of eating establishments from good pub food to cordon bleu within easy reach - the Checkers in Montgomery boasts a Michelin Star.
There is a golf course at Pontesbury (clubs available to borrow) and trout fishing at White Gritt - both within 10 minutes.

From the north, follow A488 south from Shrewsbury in the direction of Bishops Castle. 2 miles after the sign "Hope" there is a flashing speed warning sign approaching a crossroads. Turn left here, signposted Shelve, and follow the road over the brow of the hill. As you enter Shelve the church is on the left, and we are the last buildings on the right, slightly lower than the road.
From the south it is probably advisable to come the above route unless coming cross-country. In this case follow the A49 Ludlow to Craven Arms, then A489 towards Bishops Castle, then A488 towards Shrewsbury. Again look out for the crossroads (a mile or so after the turn for Nind) and turn right to Shelve.

Really peaceful and relaxing place to spend a long weekend or week. Plenty of good walks and I left feeling fully relaxed and refreshed. Tucked away in the countryside with very few cars, only lambs, chickens and a stream for company. The rooms are big and have a big kitchen area and vegetable garden outside and views for miles beyond. Good for foodies too - 30mins to picturesque market town Ludlow for farmers markets, boutiques and the famous Michelin starred La Becasse restaurant - delicious! A real hidden gem of a place, I will be back...! |
