Home description

Unique. Unpretentious.

Overlooking the tiny hamlet of Lafargue, part of the commune of Castans, the house is set in a steep hillside garden. A large south facing terrace gives fine views down the valley. A small fast flopwing river runs close by. Chestnut and evergreen oak woods cover much of the surrounding hillsides. Wildlife abounds: deer, wild boar and many species of bird. A network of well waymarked footpaths provides a choice of walks from one hour strolls to eight hour hikes.
Inside besides the three upstairs bedroom there is a living room with log fire, a utility room, two bathrooms and a well equipped kitchen with a table seating up to eight. A large rock in one corner is an unusual feature!.
Small children will need close supervision in the steep terraced garden.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

This region is particularly well known for its beauty and rich history. Some of the fantastic sights include:

Carcassonne is the largest walled city in Europe and a genuine Cathar Castle. The city is simply stunning and boasts one of the most famous skylines in France. Despite its ancient and ethereal quality, Carcassonne has all the conveniences of a modern city. Below the fortifications is the Ville Basse which offers wonderful local produce including the famous and delicious local duck.

The Cathar Castles: There are many beautiful castles throughout this region which are well worth a visit. Original Cathar Castles were built by vassals and allies of the Counts of Toulouse during the Cathar period. However many of the Cathar Castles found in France today were actually built in the 17th Century (after the Cathar Crusade) to defend France from its new border with Aragon. Genuine Cathar Castles include Carcassonne and Cabaret (Lastours), and ruins at Peyreperteuse, and Puivert. However there are many more fabulous castles built on the sites of Cathar strongholds which include: Coustaussa, Puilaurens, Montségur, Queribus, Termes, Aguila.

Take a trip to Minervois; wine country. Sample some of the fantastic wines from the world famous vineyards. Well worth a visit is the historic capital of Minervois,Minerve. Minerve is a fortified medieval village and has been selected as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The Most Beautiful Villages Of France")

Minervois area

We are situated in a tiny hamlet in the Montagnes Noires - between the towns of Mazamet and Carcasonne.

Lafargue, part of the commune of Castans, is a beautiful hamlet set amongst rolling hills and verdant valleys. A more idylic setting you couldn't hope to find; prepare for total relaxation. Several times a week the hamlet receives deliveries of fresh produce from the region. Local farmers in the hamlet will also be happy to provide you with the freshest produce for your dinner, so you can discover a traditional side of France that most tourists will never enjoy. A network of waymarked footpaths offers a choice of walks from easy strolls suitable for small children to all day expeditions for experienced hikers. Locally organised outings, some by moonlight, often include restaurant interludes.

Visit Trebes: a pretty little town with a port and lots of amenities including: shops, restaurants, hotels, banks, sports complex, municipal swimming pool. This peaceful little port is situated on the banks of the Canal Du Midi, an idylic location with plenty of character. Every Wednesday there is a market on the bank of the Canal du Midi, with lots of fresh produce from the local farmers. In July and August you will also find some night markets or ‘Artisanat et Saveurs’.

Visit the medieval village of Hautpoul (pictured), where todays modern woodcarvers and artists are at work.

Near to Lafargue you can enjoy horse riding, serious walking, restaurants and fishing. There is also a huge swimming lake within 10 minutes drive of lafargue.
