The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The region is filled with historical sites. There are many Cathar castles and abbeys to visit and places of interest from the Roman occupation. The medieval city of Carcassonne is not too far away, nor is the ancient city of Minerve.
The Aude boasts 50km of beautiful coastline and there are several villages with hot thermal spas.
After the winter months, temperatures usually start to rise in April/May with the summers being very hot and dry with temperatures in the 30s.
To the north of Argens Minervois is the Parc Naturel Regional du Haut Languedoc, the Pic de Nore rising to 1.2m, edged by the Montagne Noires in the west.
In July the Festival de la Cite with dance, theatre and music and a fireworks display on Bastille Day takes place in Carcassonne, followed by the medieval pageant of Les Medievales at the beginning of August.
In Lezignan Corbieres an introduction to local wines is provided at the Musee de la Vigne et du Vin.
Narbonne was the capital of Rome's first colony in Gaul. The Horreum, an underground grain store divided into small rooms and the remains of the first Roman road, Via Domitia, can be seen.
The nearest beach is Narbonne Plage (35 minutes drive) which has a very wide sandy beach which slopes gently into the sea making it ideal for children. Further south towards the Spanish border, which is about a 1 hour 15 minutes drive, there are many other resorts and quaint fishing villages, amongst the prettiest is Coullioure.
At nearby Lac de Jouarre water sports can be undertaken. If you play golf, there is an excellent 18 hole course at Carcassonne. If you like walking the hills and mountains around the area are in abundance. Cycling is always popular here with paths alongside the Canal du Midi.
Whatever your interests, there is something to do for everyone in the Aude.
