F46 - The Oval
Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
On West Street in Dunster, an historically fascinating, quirky cottage, once an open 'hall house' believed to date from the 1400s – one of the oldest buildings in Dunster. Now beautifully upgraded, furnished and decorated whilst retaining its charm, history and wonky floors. At the back, small courtyard (table/chairs) and, up steep steps (gate, handrail), decked patio (table/benches) with fruit trees and lovely views over the village to wooded hills.Inside downstairs, tiled/stone floors with rugs, ancient timbers, leaded windows, low doorways, beams. Behind a heavy timber door, oak-screened hall, off which comfortable living room (TV/DVD) with stone-hearthed fireplace (woodburner). Snug with easy chairs - a quiet reading room. Up 2 steps to breakfast/dining area with French windows to courtyard and smartly fitted oak kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, fridge-freezer, range cooker). Behind a low medieval doorway, a utility room (tumble drier, sink) and cloakroom (loo), perfect for wet coats/boots and dogs. Stairs (stairgates) up to three bedrooms – a beautiful double (5' four-poster, TV) with door to shower-room (suite, also accessible from landing), a twin, and another double (footboard) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower); both double rooms have vaulted ceilings, cruck beams, good fabrics, window seats. Permit provided for reserved parking space in Nat. Trust car park; second parking space, 450 yards. Poor TV reception in adverse weather; internet-connected TV provided. A very lovely, civilised house in a beautiful village.

The West Country region
Exmoor: exquisite National Park beside the sea: beech trees, sheep, wheeling buzzards and heather hills, from many of which you look over the sea to Wales and its mountains. Below are the most gracefully carved of steep oak-filled valleys where rushing, bouldered little rivers are paddleable and the red deer spend the winters, and perhaps the most dream-like rose-covered cottage villages of them all, where the pace of life is leisurely. At night, marvellously unpolluted skies for stargazing (recently designated an International Dark Sky Reserve).
Porlock Vale is one of the most beautiful farmed bits of England, Dunkery must be ascended, the area of The Chains is wild and wonderful for walking or riding; the Oare valley (Lorna Doone country) is an excellent place to take Granny for a visit to tiny, fascinating Oare church, a cream tea in Malmsmead and a sunset drive afterwards through the Valley of the Rocks to Woody Bay (if you drive well). Minehead, the main town, is good for sandcastles, has a Butlins (and a good golf course and a harbour) and isn't too big. Medieval Dunster is very pretty and has a fine castle (inhabited, National Trust); Dulverton, on the southern edge of the moor and popular with artists, has interesting shops and galleries; Culbone church, one of England's smallest, is worth walking to. Lots of good food pubs in 'hidden' villages, like Luxborough, where the welcome is warm and the atmosphere relaxed.
Dunster: one of the West Country's prettiest large villages in exceptional countryside, its castle on a wooded hillside standing romantically over its lovely main street. Ancient buildings, cottages; fine church; attractive pubs. Exmoor's heather hills, 6 miles; the sea/sand, 1. Minehead (small resort town, sandy beach, steam railway, golf), 1 mile.

"Great location - comfortable spacious cottage"
The 'Oval' is in a great location, within 5 minutes stroll of the village and castle of Dunster. Don't worry about parking outside the cottage, we found that the road was more than adeq… More
Thank you very much for your kind comments, certainly it sounds as though you had a very enjoyable and busy week at The Oval! I hope that we will see you again in the future.
