About this location
The Midi-Pyrénées region
Aux Volets Bleus is in the Aveyron Gorges just a short walk to the rivers Aveyron and Cerou. The whole area is steeped in history from the Romans to the 2nd World War. Most of the villages are medieval "bastides", fortified villages with a chateau, built during the Albigensian crusades or in defence against the English.
The Gaillac wine region is one of the oldest in France and tastings can be arranged at some of the many family run vineyards where you would be welcomed. Cordes-sur-Ciel is one of the most beautiful villages in France and really does disappear into the sky.
St Antonin-Noble-Val in contrast, hugs the Aveyron river valley. The narrow streets, evocative of its past and on a Sunday morning, the famous bustling market is a must see. In spring, the wild flowers are wonderful and I can offer guided walks to see orchids in May and June. Ask me for more information.
This is a region of almost unlimited sporting activities from canoeing to horse riding, and para-gliding and climbing for the more adventurous.
If you feel like doing nothing, then laze by the lovely salt water pool in the shade of the plum, quince, fig and almond trees.
Walking is very popular in this area, take a gentle stroll in the shady Vallee de Bonan or a more strenuous walk to the top of the Aveyron gorge with its spectacular views.
There a some beautiful gardens for visiting at all seasons of the year.
In summer, there are festivities in every local village: Jazz in Milhars, Opera in Bruniquel, Occitan in Laguepie, Music and drama in Vaour. You could be out every night of the week.
Only 45 minutes away, is Albi with its World Heritage Cathedral and Toulouse-Lautrec Museum. An hour in the other direction is Figeac, the birthplace of Jean-François Champollion who translated the Rosetta stone and who is honoured with a marvellous museum.
Pre-history is everywhere, when out walking, there are menhirs and dolmen and caves with painting to find by accident. But within easy driving, are major sites such as the Gouffe de Padirac and Pech Merle.
