The Lassithi Prefecture region
The villa is in the Lasithi Region of Crete, the North East, which also includes the famous Leper Colony Island of Spinalonga, the subject of a famous book ' The Island ' and is well worth a visit as long as you don't mind a very short boat trip. On the same day trip you can also take in the regions capital Agios Nikolaos, an upmarket resort that has many a cruise liner call for its shopping and famous inner lake, around which you can sit at the many tavernas, eat, drink and watch the world go by.
There are good un crowded roads to coastal areas to the east, follow the coast past Agios, the road climbs a little and offers incredible sea views whilst passing through picturesque unspoilt villages that are now beyond the normal tourist areas of the island.
Alternatively go West back towards the airport and the capital Heraklion to experience the more densely populated and developed tourist areas with the popular resorts of Malia and Hersonissos and for a cultural experience visit the ruins of the Minoan Palace at Knossos.
The final option is to go inland and climb up into mountain villages that are the ' real ' Crete, the region takes its name from the Lasithi Plateau, as the name suggests this is a very fertile flat area high up in the mountains and has the Diktaean Cave rumoured to be the birth place of Zeus, the Greek God of the Sky.
Finally for the serious walkers there are scenic gorge walks scattered around the island the most famous being the Samaria Gorge on the South West coast, at around 16 klms ( 9 miles ) long.
The island enjoys a very good climate with guaranteed sun during the months of June, July and August, May and September are slightly less sun sure and can have to odd overcast day, temperatures are still high and very comfortable. The months of April and October are less predicable, there can be the odd shower but dries quickly and lend themselves to the more energetic, perfect conditions for walking and cycling.
Our home village is in two parts, the old very traditional village consisting of its narrow streets, made up of many properties that are original and some renovated. The villages inhabitants are from the older generation, the younger people having moved away to find work in the capital, the mainland or even further afield as their aspirations have taken them.
The village still has the traditional kafaneon and two tavernas both serving Greek food, one during the day and the other mostly at night, a little way out of the village is Milatos Cave having a chapel within and is of important historical significance in Cretan history.
The second part is the beach area, half a kilometre down on the sea front, a concrete development from the eighties when it was built to cater for the influx of tourists to the Greek Islands. It has about ten taverna's selling traditional Greek food and is very relaxed and laid back place to be. Quieter in recent years, unless its a beautiful Sunday or National Holiday, when they fill up quickly with Greeks from nearby towns for a relaxing meal with their families.
They are all family run and have a reputation for their fresh fish, they will offer you a very warm welcome and make you feel special.

"A perfect stay, wonderful villa, beautiful setting, highly recommended."
We have just come back from Milatos heights and it was everything we could of hoped for and more for our trip to Crete. We were met on arrival by the owner to show us around and give us the key, the villa is brand new and absolutely immaculate and has all the mod cons you could possibly need, they have thought of everything! Clean linen and towels were provided during our stay. The view is superb and situated in a great position for sightseeing. We looked at many other places to stay but this is by far the best, you cannot go wrong staying here. There are plenty of great tavernas close by all which serve great food. Highly recommended!
