About this location
The Lombardy region
here some more information about Isola quarter and the others two closest area "corso como" and "Brera"
The Isola area in Milan is near Porta Garibaldi Station which was built between the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century. The name came from one of the nearby farmhouses ( also called "isole"-islands). The Isola Garibaldi, can also lay claim to a particular situation which after the construction of the railway and the division of the road from Porta Garibaldi to Dergano and Como, became effectively isolated from the surrounding area. Today the area can only be reached via the bridge in via Farini, which existed at the beginning of the last century as an underpass and was nicknamed the "Rising Bridge" due to the resurgences that characterised the area before the railway yards of Farini and Dogana were built. After the First World War the area underwent many transformations. Today it is the centre of one of the most important urban renewal projects in the city of Milan. It will be dotted with steel and glass buildings, the tallest of which should reach almost 150 metres. The train tracks, the road and car parks and a street with shops will all go underground. The fast traffic will be redirected to the north. On the other side of the square there will be a Fashion Museum and to the north a 108 thousand metre park (The Tree Library). This two level city will be connected to other office districts: The new site of the Milan City Council in via Melchiorre Gioia and the Regional Council skyscraper in via Sassetti.
One of the most popular streets during happy hour between 19:00 and 22:00. Having a drink in Corso Como, which starts at the Arco di Porta Garibaldi and ends at the Porta Garbaldi Station square, is a must for everyone from office staff and managers who work in the area, to models looking for fun after a day on the catwalk and tourists who want to savour the glamour of the Italian fashion capital. Not to be missed 10 Corso Como. A space where – as all Milanese know – is not just a luxury shop for buying and selling things but rather a concept store where creativity, art and style meet.
A small artistic paradise in the heart of Milan. The Brera quarter is charming. Near to piazza della Scala and in front of the palazzo della Pinacoteca. From a haunt for bohemian artists in the nineteenth century to the present day refined area, with elegant shop windows displaying above all antiques. It is also the haven of fake bags. Here among a Prada and a Louis Vuitton, there is a multitude of pubs, small bars, chic restaurants and trattorias. Not to mention the numerous fortune tellers to read people's hands.
Today Brera, the Montmartre of the Lombardy city has somewhat lost its old “essence”. Here in fact there were “busy” places not only popular with writers but also with journalists from the Corriere della Sera. To name but a few, the Giamaica, the Tombon, and Due. The Giamaica, thanks to its location just a stone's throw from the Art Academy, was the natural haunt for artists and aspiring artists, at the Due young people used to meet up and at the Tombon “everyone else” congregated. More philosophical and old world before, now more fashionable and restored. Yet for the young and not so young Brera is still appealing. It still has an atmosphere, an aura that remains. Narrow streets, small trendily decorated bars and clubs, soft lighting and live music.
A walk in the area is obligatory to discover a more day-to-day and familiar dimension of Milan, among alleys where it is possible to hear the sounds of a very different city. In Via San Marco among organic food shops and art galleries. In Via dei Fiori Chiari and its continuation, via Fiori Oscuri. “Giorno e Notte” and also “Bene e Male”. Tradition has it that in Via dei Fiori Chiari there was an institution for pious girls and that in via Fiori Oscuri on the other hand there was a brothel.
