The Lombardy region
Milan, Italy's second largest city, is located in Northwestern Italy, at the foothills of the Alps. Before the Romans, who called it Mediolanum, in Milan lived the Celts. After the Romans, Lombardy, of which Milan is now the Capital, was invaded by the Longobards who ruled (Nothern) Italy from 568 to 774 a.d.
Milan is a vibrant, multicultural city whose fame goes beyond the world of fashion and design. Milan is Italy's most industrialised area and economic heart. Milan hosts Italy's Stock Exchange. Per capita income in Milan is among E.U. highest. Duomo and Sforzesco Castle certainly are two of its strongest symbols; however, Milan has many other treasures that wait to be discovered. The Navigli district, for instance, with its navigable canals and art and antique fairs; Brera, with its historical buildings and its Pinacoteca (Museum of Arts) where on display are some world famous paintings dating back to the Renaissance, like Mantegna's Dead Christ. Milan boasts other cultural gems like the Museum of Design, featuring collections of past and present Gods of the design field, Museum of Sforza Castle, Museum of sciences and technology to name a few. Art exhibitions are running throughout the city year-round. As we write, for intance, Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace, beside the Duomo) is hosting an exhibition about Warhol, Pollock and Kandinsky with paintings coming from around the world
Milan is also well known, in Italy as well as abroad, for its great cuisine. The city hosts Italy's largest fish market that delivers fish both to all renown restaurants in Milan and beyond. Anybody can find planty of restaurants to satisfy his/her tastes. Night life is also Italy's best. All around the city are bars and clubs that each night of the year fill up of international crowds. Concerts of all kinds are also happening each night of the year, featuring both big multimillion label artists as well as underground artists.
Milan rests some 50 km south of the Swiss border, 70 km from Lugano, 280 km from Zurich, 280 km from Venice, 140 km from Turin and the mountains that hosted 2005 Olympic Winter Games, 160 km from Verona, 170 km from Portofino, 300 km from Florence, 580 km from Rome. Beautiful Lake Como region is 40 km away. Garda Lake is some 130 km away.
Milan has a typical humid continental climate with warm summers, quite cold winters and no dry season. Temperatures: Winter: average 4-6 °C; Summer: average 30 °C.
Lombardy is a fascinating Region that extends from the Alps (with world-wide renown ski resorts like Bormio and peaks as high as 3.996 mt above sea level) to the Po Valley, in the Pianura Padana. Lombardy comprises vast forests as well as enchanting Lakes among which Lake Como, Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda stand out for their sizes and sceneries. Other smaller lakes, too, seduce the traveller (e.g.: Lake Iseo, Lake Idro, etc.). Virtually all sports can be played withing Lombardy. From winter sports to water sports. Lombardy also features a great number of golf clubs, some of which are nestled amongst idyllic surroundings.
Exploring Milan area can be fascinating for a number of reasons. Following, is a brief list of some of those reaons. Being a Metropolis (Italy's second largest city after Rome), one of Europe's richest, in Milan one can find and do most of what can be found and done in any other Western metropolis. Milan area will, therefore, satisfy all sorts of tastes, from culinary interests to cultural and artistic ones. Milan possesses a double identity. It does show Italian values and characteristics, both in its people and in its architecture, as well as strong mitteleuropean cultural traits. The flaneur, sitting at a table in a Piazza or pedestrian street, will be pleased by watching the multiethnic crowds go by. The traveller provided with an anthropologist's eye will enjoy, among other things, spotting the differences and similarities that bring Milan far from Italian culture and close to it, respectively.
What makes Milan special is, among other things, the elegance of its streets and piazzas and the elegance of people, restaurants, cafés, clubs, shops, etc. The people of Milan are known to be hardworking people; they, however, combine that quality with an irresistible appetite for hedonistic habits.
Moreover, Milan hosts one of the greatest theaters of the World: La Scala, "home" of Giuseppe Verdi, which should be on the must-see list of anybody visiting Milan. Not to mention the Duomo, one of the most magnificent examples of perfectly preserved Gothic architecture.
Milan also offers several movietheater showing original language films.
