The Costa del Sol/Malaga region

The Costa del Sol stretches along just over 150 kilometres of Málaga province and is one of Spain's most popular tourist destinations. The area's mild climate is the root attraction that makes it possible to enjoy the beaches and a wide variety of outdoor activities year round.

Resorts boisterous and elegant offer every amenity and facility imaginable, all within one hour of Malaga Airport. Miles of sandy beaches, rows of hotels, and over 320 days of sunshine every year. There is something on offer here for everyone. The coastal resorts of Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Marbella are amongst the most popular. Further down the coast are quieter areas that are still developing, such as that of Estepona, a quaint town with a wonderful seafront and a prosperous future in the holiday marketplace. Since the 1950's this area has been a popular destination, attracting more and more people each year. The airport, roads, rail and other facilities have grown in accordance with demand.

The lifestyle is 'ideal' and you can get out of it, what you put in. Golfers who wish to play on first class courses in dry, sunny weather will find all that they want on the Costa del Sol. There are in fact some of the best courses in the world. If sight-seeing is part of your agenda then this wonderful area has much to offer. Within a short distance are major cities worth seeing and on the other extreme are tiny white-washed villages clinging to the mountain sides. Not far from the crowded beaches are true Spanish villages such as Casares, Ronda, Manilva and Sabinillas, all locked in time. Along the coast, tourists of all nationalities are made welcome and there are few places that do not understand English.

WHITE VILLAGES

One doesn't have to step back far from the golden sands, into the foothills to see some of the most beautiful white villages in the world. Villages such as Casares, Manilva and Mijas sit high on the mountain with houses standing like little white boxes, glued to the slopes. This is the Costa del Sol that most tourists miss and these little villages are tiny pieces of paradise that have been by-passed by the holiday boom. Most have retained their Andalucian charm and every day passes the same as the last. If one can handle the summer heat on a short trek into the hills then the views over the towns and on to the sea are worthy of anyone's photograph album and fully justify the pain.

Mijas / Buena Vista, Mijas area

A short drive away is the beautiful Spanish village of Mijas, which on this everchanging coast has managed to retain its rustic charm. Donkeys walking along cobbled streets and numerous fiestas taking place reflect how life here has remained as traditional as ever. Alternatively, the bustling resorts of Fuengirola and Benalmadena are both within a 15 minute drive away.

One of the jewels of the Costa del Sol is the beautiful little village of Mijas, which nestles comfortably in the mountainside at 428 meters above sea level; it is a superb choice for either holiday or full time living. Of the 7,500 population, there are so many foreign and English speaking residents in and around the pueblo that the Town Hall has a very helpful Foreigner's Department, which caters for the many needs of those who do not speak Spanish.

When you wander through the narrow cobbled streets of this Andalucian village, you can understand what has attracted foreigners to settle here over the years. Many artists and writers have made it their home, enjoying the benefits of an excellent all year round climate, without being part of the busier, more commercial coastal towns just 7 kilometres down the mountain side. Despite its huge popularity with tourists, Mijas Pueblo has somehow managed to retain much of its traditional Andalucian way of life, the locals displaying their unabashed passion for all things festive and an unmistakable relaxed 'mañana' outlook on anything that can be put off for another day.

In Mijas the following events take place each year.

January
On the 6th of January there is a procession (Cabalgata), when the Three Kings parade through the streets on colourful floats. Sweets are thrown to the many children lining the streets. The 6th of January is traditionally the day that children are given their Christmas presents in Spain and so this is a big day for them and the whole family.

February
The Carnival is celebrated in February, when there are lots of fun events and the chance to don your fancy dress.

March/April
Easter week in Mijas Pueblo is very pretty and it is well worth visiting at this time of year, although if you are looking to stay there during the Easter celebrations, you would need to book up well in advance, since it is one of the busiest times of the year. The narrow village streets come alive with history and tradition.

May
On the second or third Saturday in May, the Town Hall organises the International Day. This multicultural festival gives all nationalities the chance to find out more about other nationalities and have a lot of fun in the process. There are stalls for each country where you can try traditional food and drink, buy presents and clothes, dance, listen to music and see shows. This is wonderful family day out and becoming more popular every year.

June
La noche de San Juan (the night of San Juan) falls on the 24th of June, but sometimes the celebrations go on over a few days. This celebration of the longest night and the beginning of summer is held in San Sebastian Street in the Village and there is a spectacular fireworks display at midnight.

Corpus Christi is celebrated in the traditional Spanish way, by covering the village streets in 'romero' (rosemary). The village takes on a somewhat mediaeval air with the wonderful smell of these herbs and the overall traditional atmosphere.

July & August
Due to the higher level of the mountain village than down on the coast, the hot summer months are a wonderful time to enjoy balmy nights at the many festivals and concerts on offer. Amongst the many things to do are;

The Flamenco Dance Festival in July, when you can see wonderful traditional dance displays by local and national groups.
A special Latin American Night in August turns the village square into a South American dance festival. You can join in the music and dancing for a hot summer night.
The Spanish Theatre Festival is also held in August in the Mijas open air theatre.
There is also a Rock night in the village, with music for the young at heart.

September
The annual Mijas Fair is a week long celebration, in honour of the patron saint of Mijas, The Virgin of the Rock, is from around the 8th of September, when the village concentrates on having fun. The main square is the hub of all the action, with various stalls and bars set up for the occasion, where there is plenty of food and drink to sample, while watching (or joining in) the traditional Sevillana dancing. This is the time to see beautifully turned out Spanish horses and an array spectacular flamenco dress, while sampling the traditional sherry.
