Directly on the 2014 Tour de France route, Wren Cottage is situated in the heart of picturesque Middleham village on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The cottage is perfect for a holiday or short break for two adults, situated in a quiet area off the main road, yet still only 100 metres from the main square with its pubs, cafe, takeaways and shop. It couldn't be better placed for exploring the Dales, whether on foot, by bicycle, motorbike or car.

This self-catering holiday accomodation comprises of a well-equipped kitchen, with full cooker, microwave and fridge with freezer compartment, together with plenty of cutlery, crockery, pans and cooking equipment. Also downstairs is a cosy lounge with TV and DVD player and an extendable dining table for those special meals. Upstairs is the spacious bedroom, which has plenty of storage; a large wardrobe and chest of drawers. The modern bathroom includes toilet, sink and electric shower. To the front is a gated yard with a designated parking space which is accessible to smaller vehicles; there is also ample free parking in the market square close by. Out of sight from the main road, the yard is, of course, relatively safe for cycles and motorbikes. Whilst Wren Cottage has no internet connection, all four village pubs offer free wifi.

Middleham is a very picturesque village, typical of the Dales, stone built around two cobbled market squares and very worthy of all the photos taken by its many visitors. Best of all is its thirteenth century castle, once the residence of Richard III and well worth a visit. Famously surrounded by many well known racing stables, the market squares echo with the sound of horses hooves as the population of racehorses head up to 'the Gallops' for training each morning.

The village shop sells newspapers, caters for all those grocery requirements and has a handy ATM. An evening out is easy in Middleham; four pubs to choose from and all serving food! For coffees or lunches, a cafe is conveniently situated by the castle. In addition, an excellent fish and chip shop and chinese takeaway/restaurant are only a minute's walk from Wren Cottage.

The Yorkshire region

Several market towns are easily accessed from Middleham. The 'jewel of the Dales', Richmond is to the North, dominated by its ancient castle, high above the River Swale. To the East are Bedale and then Northallerton, whilst heading Westward, up into the Pennines, one finds the charming little town of Hawes. All these are served by local buses and linked by 'A' roads.

For days out, the visitor is spoilt for choice! The Wensleydale Steam Railway, which passes through Leyburn, Aysgarth Falls, Masham, home to both Theakston and Black Sheep Breweries, The Forbidden Corner, Askrigg (of All Creatures Great and Small), Jervaulx, Bolton and Fountains Abbeys, The Wensleydale Creamery, Gayle Mill, Thirsk, with the Herriot Museum, Ripon with its cathedral, not forgetting York, which has plenty of museums, excellent shopping and sightseeing, York Minster, ancient walls and much, much more.

The Settle - Carlisle Railway with the famous Ribblehead Viaduct lies to the South-West of Hawes, towards Ingleton and the rugged Three Peaks district.

Within easy driving distance are the North Yorkshire Moors, Helmsley and Pickering, together with the coastal resorts of Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Staithes.

Middleham

Middleham is situated between the beautiful valleys of Wensleydale and Coverdale; both within easy walking distance of the village. The surrounding landscape is stunning - overlooked by the wild hillsides with their open moorland above, whilst below lie lush green pastures, bordered by miles of Yorkshire's dry-stone walls. A walk on Middleham Low Moor (the Gallops) gives an amazing panoramic view. This makes it perfect for hiking and cycling at every ability level. Maps and guides are left in the cottage for visitors' use.

The roads are generally quiet, away from noisy through traffic, which means that getting around is easy at any time of the day. Driving in this area is always a pleasure as the views (particularly from the more remote lanes) are spectacular.

Close by is Leyburn with a bustling Friday market. The picturesque town has a good selection of shops, including the essentials; supermarket, banks and chemist.
