The Costa Dorada/Tarragona region
The Costa Daurada has 216 kilometres of beaches and is known as Spain's Golden Coast. Reus takes 30 minutes and has comprehensive services and shopping.
Cambrils and Salou beaches take 25 minutes and they have developed into one of the main tourist areas in Catalonia, with facilities and entertainment for all ages, including various boat excursions along the coast. After sunset, they are the liveliest resorts on the Costa Daurada. Salou has karting circuits for adults and children, a bungee trampoline and a bungee rocket.
Port Aventura Theme and Water Park takes 20 minutes. It is Europe's second largest adventure theme park and is owned by Universal Studio. The big ride is the Dragon Khan, with its 70mph first drop and eight inversions. There are plenty of food outlets to cater for all needs. The indoor/outdoor Costa Caribe, the Caribbean-themed water park, also has a beach area and is an ideal venue to cool off.
Aquopolis Water Park near Salou takes 25 minutes. It has one of the most modern dolphinarium in Europe. Aqualand Safari and Water Park near Salou takes 25 minutes.
Tarragona is the nearest large town and takes 35 minutes. It is the regional capital and has one of the finest examples of a Roman city. It has a well-preserved Roman aqueduct, cathedral, amphitheatre and museums. It has a good beach and excellent shopping facilities.
Barcelona takes 90 minutes. It is Spain's second city and has fashionable streets with cultural and tourist attactions. It has one of Europe's largest and best zoos. Parking is difficult, so it is advisable to go by train. Montserrat takes 90 minutes. It is the home of the Sanctuary of the Virgin and the Santa Monica Benedictine monastery, which, for nearly a thousand years, has been at the service of pilgrims from all over the world.
Llieda takes 90 minutes. It offers mountain trekking, balloon and helicopter flights, horse riding, mountain bike or jeep excursions and river water rafting. The two information kiosk sat L'Hospitalet de L'infant will have details of how to pre-book before going.
Valencia takes 120 minutes. It is a vibrant cosmopolitan city. If you are in Spain during March and need a good reason to travel to Valencia, Las Fallas is about the best one. Between the 12th and 19th of March, the people of Valencia block traffic with towering sculptured statues which artisans have spent the past year making. All day and night, crowds of locals and foreigners fill the streets and the sounds of exploding firecrackers and fireworks fill the air.
Miami Playa area
Miami Playa is easily accessible from Barcelona being only 1 hours drive. A seaside resort situated in a magnificent bay in the Costa Dorada, deep in the South of Catalonia and well known as the gate to the Iberian peninsula, it offers everything one could desire.
Miami Playa has a beautiful sandy and shingle bays, which are broken by unusual rocky reefs and cliffs. A wide pine -forest reaches to the sea and is interlaced with beautiful walks. Golf club Bonmont (18 holes, handicap 28 male - 36 female) and two further golf courses nearby.
There are Shops, restaurants, tennis, horse riding and all entertainment. The area is especially suited golfers and sports enthusiasts (land and water sports).
The beaches of the Costa Dorada – from Tarragona till the Ebro-Delta – are sandy and clean and are falling gently into the ocean
Temperatures - 300 days of sunshine per year!
Nov. - March ca 10 - 15 0 C April - June ca 20 - 25 0 C July - Oct. up to 32 0 C
THE BEACHES Miami Playa scattered along the length of the Seafront promenade has a children’s park facing the sea and in the height of the summer there are trampolines, ice creams kiosks and bars scattered along the beach itself. This is a beach which is never packed. There is always space to spread out and even in August, the busiest time of the year, you can position yourself at the waters edge. The beach is kept very clean. Sundowners and deck chairs are available throughout the summer for a small charge, although you are advised to take your own parasol.
There are plenty of bars and restaurants where you can either snack or have a full meal. The quality of food and service is good in the majority of the beach you can choose to eat on the sun terrace, or in the air conditioned covered area. This is a popular restaurant and can sometimes be busy.
NOTE It is not usual for there to be no smoking areas in the restaurants in Spain, and nor do many provide highchairs for children. Despite this the general attitude to children in Spain is one of tolerance and it is usual for children to be eating in restaurants with their parents until midnight!
The bars and restaurants along the promenade are very traditionally Spanish (you won’t find any fish and chips on offer and pints of beer). Most menus are available in Spanish, French, German and Catalan. Not all are available in English.
There are many coves that can be accessed too. These are at the entrance to Miami Playa from Cambrils (under the railway) and are only accessed by steps.
Cambrils The beach here is busier and with that comes more restaurants, bars, shops and McDonalds etc. There is also a small port with boat trips along the coast and again the walk along the beach is a pleasant one. There are children’s play areas on the beach and this beach is more populated than the one in Miami
Salou This is about 25 min drive from Miami and has the busiest sea front and is a fairly major package holiday destination. It has many bars and nightclubs and the beach is often packed. The restaurants are more expensive and the standard of food, and service, is generally disappointing. There are two large beaches to Salou and you need to park in the car parks, (can be expensive) or a walk away from the beach itself. However behind Salou is Universal Studio’s Port Aventura and Costa Caribe Water Park. These are the largest in Europe (after Disney) and have a good mixture of rides. See more details below.
USEFUL INFO Supermarkets There are several supermarkets in Miami Playa, the largest being Intermarche which you will find on the left hand side of the national road heading towards If you are planning to pay with a credit card in the supermarket you WILL NEED a form of ID, usually a passport, and remember that the majority of the smaller shops close between 1.30 and 5.00 for the siesta. They do stay open until 8 or 9. The largest supermarket in the area is in Reus and is the Carrefour. It sells food, clothes, electrics, CDs, bicycles and so on.
Medical The nearest hospital is in Reus. The chemists in Spain ( Farmacia) will usually be of much help should you need medication for a sore throat, tummy upset etc. Within Miami there are doctors and dentists who you can – some of them speak English, some of them dont. It is worth familiarising yourself with where they are based and when they are available.
Tourist Information Visiting them at the beginning of the holiday as you can pick up discount vouchers for the main attractions and details of local walks in the mountains. Bikes are available for hire in Miami Playa.
PORT AVENTURA A must go to attraction. It is an excellent and long day out. Port Aventura is a large theme park about 20 mins drive from Miami. There are some fantastic rides and shows. It is best to get there early and plan to stay late. In the middle of the summer months the park stays open until midnight, and there is a huge firework display on weekends (which you can see from the beach in Miami).
You can get on most of the roller coasters (except Dragon Khan). There is food outlets scattered throughout and water points also.
Port Aventura consists of various themed lands, such as the Wild West, China, Polynesia, Mexico and so on. It is excellent fun for the family and your entrance does entitle you to one express ticket for the more popular attractions which means you are told what time to arrive for your ride and basically you get straight to the front of the queue! -one actually tells you this when you get your entrance ticket). You can upgrade your entrance by getting a gold bracelet (costs approx 17 euros extra) which then allows you express entry into all the rides which have this facility.
COSTA CARIBE This is a water park which is next door. It has an indoor area and an outside area. Food is also available. You can get combo tickets for both please– enquire It is good fun and worth a visit. You will be able to get discount vouchers from the tourist offices for both attractions.
