The Lombardy / Lake Como Area

This area of the lake takes on different shapes because of the unification of the two branches, Lecco and Como. We have the wide open area between Menaggio-Bellagio-Varenna and the closed area towards Argegno. It is at this point that the mountains slope vertically into the lake and that the lake reaches its maximum depth (410 metres, the deepest of the Italian lakes.) It is an area which is rich in history with evidence of a glorious past to be discovered in the beautiful villas scattered on both banks of the lake.

In Tremezzina Villa Carlotta represents a real treasure, and in spring its gardens full of blossoming azaleas provide a spectacular view for nature lovers. In the rooms of the historic villa there is a museum with famous paintings and sculptures. Varenna with its villas, Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi, has reached international fame as a tourist centre and venue for Congresses In Bellagio, the "Pearl of the Lario", tourism is the main economic industry. Here too a destination for the elite, whilst strolling under the porticos, one can meet stars from the world of sports and showbusiness.

Art has left a profound mark in this area, the history of the villas and of the picturesque villages has so much to tell us and the landscape is breathtaking. Villa Melzi with its museum and its gardens, Villa Serbelloni with the characteristic portico of Loppia, and San Giovanni, the dividing point of the two branches, are just a few of the treasures which fascinate tourists and arouse enthusiasm amongst art lovers and admirers of artistic beauty. Even in the luxurious hotels which line the shores with cafeterias and restaurants one discovers a tourism which boasts old traditions. Tremezzo, Griante, Cadenabbia, Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna were the localities preferred by the European nobility at the turn of the 19th century.

This is the time in which tourism was born. It has since then grown into an industry which todays offers a refined hospitality with congressional facilities and where sports and leisure boats are built and exported all over the world. It is in the central area of the lake that we reach peak accommodation capacity with different classes of hotel facilities which year by year are boosted with new important additions.

Villa Carlotta is a marvellous high-class residence on the western shore of Lake Como constructed in 1690 by the Milanese banker Giorgio Clerici and donate by the princess Marianna of Nassau, wife of Albert of Prussia, to her daughter Carlotta for her wedding with the Duke of Sassonia Meiningen. Villa Carlotta hosts very important works of art of Canova, Appiani, Hayez and antique furniture, acquired by the Marquis of Sommariva. Really of great value and evocation the landscape garden, realised by the Dukes of Sassonia-Meiningen (19th century).

The gardens of Villa Carlotta chiefly owe their reputation to the rhododendrons’ and azaleas’ spring flowering, consisting of over 150 different sorts. But the gardens are worth to visit in every period of the year: old varieties of camellias, century old cedars and sequoias, huge planes and tropical plants, the Rock garden and the Ferns valley, the Rhododendrons wood and the Bamboos garden, the agricultural tools museum and the wonderful views on the lake built in the ages the celebrity of this place, still today considered "a place of heaven".

Tremezzo has given the name to the Tremezzina coast or Coast of azaleas, praised since the Middle Ages like eternal spring's place. Perhaps we must date back the name of Tremezzo to its location half way in the road between Como and Sorico (the ancient Via Regina). In Tremezzo there is one of the most celebrated villas, Villa Carlotta, open to the public, with a wonderful italian garden with a beautiful fountain at the entrance, in front of the villa, and hedges of box-trees,orange and lemon trees, exotic and rare plants.

Menaggio is situated on a small cape where the Lake Como reveals in all its awfulness. Optimal its receptive and sport equipment, graceful the dock often full of boats multicolours. Menaggio during the war of the ten years was opposed to Como, it suffered pillages and destructions in 1400 and 1500 and, as a result of that, its walls, that defended the village, were pulled down. Here, the sculptor Leone Leoni (1509-1590)was born. He was said improperly the Aretino. Between the churches, the poligonale Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Peace (in Nobiallo fraction deserves a signal) built up in 1660 in order to celebrate the Peace of the Pyrenees (1659), a stage of the Spanish forfeiture. The particularly mild climate of Menaggio, ventilated from Breva and the Tivano, and the optimal position to the sun had made possible the growth of exotic flora on the lakewalk to the beginning of the century or in the parks of the numerous villas.

The Comacina Island is the only island of the Lario. Today half-deserted, it was inhabited since the times roman. It had monuments in paeolocristiana age already (V sec.) and it grew of importance until becoming, in the sec.XII one of i Common more powerful of Como lake. When the war between the Common ones burst of Como and Milan the Comacina Island was placed of flank to the from Milan ones to which it gave hand for the destruction of Como. The revenge of the Comaschi it burst in 1169: all it was destroyed and on the island it did not remain that Hush. The survivors migrate in part on the next coast and part to Varenna. The beautifulst ruderi of one can tutt' today be admired huge Roman Basilica dedicated to S.Eufemia. A visit to the island is prevailed for the wonderful views that it offers, for the great peace and one pause in one between the most typical lariani restaurants. We advise the festival of S.John who celebrates every year, Sunday after the day of S.John (23rd June), with great fireworks on the lake.

It's an important town of the western side of the Lario, situated between the cape of Lavedo and the valley of Porlezza, at the beginnings of the coastal area called - Tremezzina- that comprises all the towns until the Maiolica.
Hidden in a deep creek, it offers a protected and particular aspect of the lake. A lot fascinating is the tour that it can be done coasting by boat the shores of the lake, rounding the promontory on which Villa Balbianello rises, until reaching the Comacina Island. From Lenno a panoramic walk, even if demanding, goes up to the Mount of Tremezzo (1700 m.).

The Villa del Balbianello is a villa in the town of Lenno, overlooking Lake Como. It is located on the tip of a small wooded peninsula on the western shore of the south-west limb of Lake Como, not far from the Isola Comacina;it is famous for its elaborate terraced gardens. The villa was built in 1787 on the site of a Franciscan monastery for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. The two towers which can be seen are the campanili (bell towers) of the convent church. After the cardinal’s death in 1796 Giuseppe Arconati Visconti bought the villa and made improvements to its gardens and the porch. In the nineteenth century the villa belonged to the Porro-Lambertenghi family. The writer and patriot Silvio Pellico was a visitor in 1819. By the early twentieth century the buildings had fallen into a state of neglect when an American military officer, Butler Ames, purchased and renovated the villa and its garden. In 1974 it was bought by the explorer Guido Monzino (leader of the first Italian expedition to climb Mount Everest), who filled it with rich collections, including artifacts acquired on his expeditions. Monzino, who died in 1988, left the villa to the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, the National Trust of Italy.

Few places are as romantic as Lake Como, and even fewer resorts as beautiful as Bellagio. Called the “Pearl of the Lake”, Bellagio's world class hotels and restaurants provide the perfect place to soak up the lake's famous panorama. The village is characterised by century-old buildings, stone lanes and picturesque cobbled stairways filled with shops showcasing the finest Italian wares. The church of San Giacomo is a stupendous example of the Roman-Lombard art (XII cent.), built between 1075 and 1125 by the Masters of Como. Inside mosaics of the early ‘900, rich altar of the end of ‘500, a “Deposition of Christ” by the Perugino school, an archaic cross (XII cent.), a triptych by Foppa (1432), a polychrome wooden sculpture of the “Buried Christ” of the Spanish-Baroque school. The church of St. Giovanni Battista is a baroque building (XVII cent.), one nave, wooden altar of ‘600. Inside the “Madonna delle Grazie”, fresco of the Lombard school, a sculture of the “Immacolata” in marble of Carrara (Bernini school), a choir in walnut with carved stalls (XVII cent.), and a painting by Gaudenzio Ferrari (1532).

Mezzegra area

Mezzegra is a small beautiful country directly on the Lake and pointed out the mountains. Here there's the house where Benito Mussolini died. But we can see only the cancel with flowers and many things for his memory. In April 28th there's a celebration in the church for him. In summer every week-end there're festivals in all the "Tremezzina country" with typical dishes, music and dancing. If you're lucky in this summer period you can see also handcrafts expositions and buy the products, if you want.

In Mezzegra continue the "green way", a way made with big grey stones which crosses the territory from Colonno to Griante without stay along the Regina street, all the "green way" is in the nature, on the hills; we can play it on foot, by bicycles, with your dog, with the children's, and it's perfect for jogging, running and other sports. Then there's the lake where you can swim or sunbathing in the beaches. Don't hesitate to come here! On summer there's always the sun, the climate is hot. And in winter you skii on the mountains at only 2 hours from us. We await you!! In this paradise.
