Residence Celeste Sette
About the home
Residence Celeste Sette is a 50-square-meter (540-square-feet) apartment
which sleeps five. It has balcony and windows which offer a beautiful view of the lake and of
the shared swimming pool and garden.
The apartment has a bedroom with a double bed, a living room with a double divan bed
and kitchenette and a bathroom. A fold-out single bed can be placed either in
the living room or in the living room.
The place
Residence Celeste was built at the end of the eighteenth century by members
of the noble family Brentano-Mezzegra. The reason for building the mansion
is singular, to say the least. Legend has it that the sons of the Count
Brentano-Mezzegra, upset with their father during a family feud, erected a new
building just in front of the family palace, to block the view of the lake that
the Count so much enjoyed. We don't know how much is history and how much is
tale, but something is for sure: the new residence enjoys a spectacular view of
the lake, while the imposing building right at its back has been "obscured", so
to speak.
Throughout the following centuries the building has been used as a monastery
and then as a farmhouse. It was an old country residence still in 2001,
when it has been restored and divided into nine holiday apartments.
The residence is located in the quiet village of Mezzegra, approximately 500
meters (550 yards) from the town center, in an uphill position
that offers a wide and charming view of the lake, of the town of Bellagio on the
opposite shore, and of the surrounding mountains. Mezzegra is a tiny lakeside village, which has a
place in history because it's here that, on April 28th 1945, Benito Mussolini
was executed, or assassinated, depending on who tells the story.
Residence Celeste can be reached by car, or, if you don't mind a bit of
uphill/downhill walking, you will be able to stay at this place and move around
by bus and ferry. The bus stop is at approximately 500 meters (550 yards)
from the villa, and the owners provide a shuttle service to and from the bus
stop for a small fee, if requested. If you have a car, you will be able to
park it on the premises, inside a fenced area.
The nine apartments at Residence Celeste are arranged on four floors, and
they all share a very nice heated swimming pool of 12 x 5.50 meters (40 x
18 feet), 1.40 meters (4.6 feet) deep, a solarium equipped with
umbrellas and sun beds, and a garden with tables and chairs. The swimming
pool is open from June 1st until September 15th, from 9 am to 7 pm. The
residence is also equipped with a sauna (pay-per-use).
At the residence you will also find a laundry room, with a washing machine, a
dryer, iron and ironing board. The washing machine and the dryer are
token-operated, and tokens can be bought on the premises.
A kids' playground is at approximately 100 meters (110 yards) from the
residence, and nearby you will also find a tennis court. At 500 meters
(550 yards) there is the closest restaurant, a cafe and grocery stores.
More restaurants, cafes and stores are in the nearby village of Lenno,
approximately 1.5 km (1 mile) from Residence Celeste.
The apartment
Residence Celeste Sette is located on the second floor of the building.
You can reach the entrance door entering the building from the back, which is at
the street level, and climbing a stairway made up of 28 steps. The
swimming pool and the garden are 35 steps from the street level.
The entrance door takes you directly into the spacious living room, from
where you will be able to enter the bedroom and the bathroom. In the
living room you will find
a divan bed to sleep two, a table with chairs and a satellite television, as
well as a kitchenette. The kitchenette is equipped with with a four-burner
cooker, a microwave oven, a small refrigerator with freezer and a dishwasher.
The living room has balconies from which you will be
able to enjoy a wide and open view of the swimming pool, of the garden and of
the lake and mountains.
The bedroom has a double bed. A fold-out bed can be placed either in
the bedroom or in the living room, according to your preference.
The bathroom, which can be entered from the corridor as well, is equipped
with a shower. The apartment is equipped with a safe box.

The Lombardy / Lake Como Area region
Lake Como, also known as Lake Lario, is the deepest lake of Europe, with a depth of 410 meters (1345 feet), as well as the third biggest Italian lake (146 km2, 56 square miles).
This area, thanks to its mild and humid climate, favours the lushness of an abundant Mediterranean flora: cypress trees, laurel trees, camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, magnolias, and palm trees.
Inhabited since prehistoric time, this "piece of heaven" is an oasis of peace, where you can relax, enjoy hikes, water sports, taste the excellent local cuisine while you're staring at the majestic mountains diving into the lake.
This wonderful landscape and the surrounding valleys inspired many Italian artists and scientists, such as Alessandro Manzoni, Virgilio, Alessandro Volta...
The Romans were the first to realise the importance of the waterway of Lake Como that they navigated in their biremes transporting legionaries and goods towards the alpine passes in the direction of central Europe.
It was only in 1826 however, the year of launching the "Lario" steamboat that the first regular navigation service was started up for the public. Today, the jumbo-hydrofoils seating 200, and the large motor launches take off on their frequent crossings from the wharf of Piazza Cavour, stopping off in all the main centres of the lake and reaching as far as Colico, 70 kilometres away to the north. The launches offer splendid cruises from April to September with lunch on board, and journeys to satisfy even the most seasoned travellers.
To embark on the "Manzoni", the "Volta", or the historic "Concordia on holidays", heading up the lake, means to live an unforgettable experience. Sailing along the shoreline, we can admire a succession of sumptuous villas, mainly eighteenth century, half-hidden in the little bays or towering over the water, following one after the other like pearls in a sparkling necklace. Then there are the churches, abbeys, picturesque villages, castles and towers that appear by magic amidst the dark green of the oak forests sloping down in all their magnificence from the steep hills to the edge of the deep blue waters.
The Mezzegra area
Mezzegra, along with Bellagio and Varenna, completes the astonishing beauty of one of the most renowned and appreciated Italian frame. This charming village of 952 inhabitants is composed by 5 districts overlooking the Lake Como.
Seeing that agriculture was the main activity, the name of the village might derive from the Latin toponym “inter agros”, that means “in the middle of fields”.
There are historical news about this delightful village, that was mentioned in a document dated at 1049. We also know that Mezzegra was involved into the battle between Guelphs and Ghibellines and had some tax exemptions, becoming part of the Duchy of Milan in 1421.
Its most popular district is Giulino, where, along via XXIV Maggio, Il Duce, Benito Mussolini, and his lover Claretta Petacci, along with some fascist hierarchs were executed (or killed, the debate is still open) by a firing squad. Here, the 28th of April 1945, a very important chapter of the modern Italian history, has come to an end.
The room in via Riale, 4, where the hierarchs spent their last night and now belongs to the house of Mr Giacomo De Maria has been kept intact thourghout the ages, and it should be easily visitable.
The old town centre used to be the sixteenth-century district of Bonzanigo, that in the richly frescoed buildings (Palazzo Brentano, Casa Rosati, Casa Abbate, Palazzo del Vescovo) has preserved traces of the fortune of its original inhabitants, subsequently emigrated to Germany.
The church of St Abbondio (Patron Saint of Mezzegra), is something not to be missed: it overlooks the lake, with a fantastic original concave façade with frescoes attributed to Giulio Quaglio and sumptuous Baroque furnishings.
