The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region

Herault is the central section of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, and stretches inland from the coast between Beziers and Montpellier.
Highlights and popular places to visit in Herault include:
- Montpellier has a reputation for being one of the most lively and vibrant cities along the southern coast of France
- another popular and attractive town between Montpellier and Narbonne is at Beziers.
- the town devoted to Molieres, is at Pezenas a little north of Béziers, and the small town of Lodeve is further north again.
- much of the coastal part of the department is taken up by the Etang de Thau (Herault), and the villages and towns around it of Balaruc-le Vieux and Bouzigues, also Loupian and Mèze. Also visit Marseillan to the southern end of the etang and Sete on the coastal side.
A few kilometres south of the bassin de Thau is the old town of Agde - and the new resort (best known for the large naturist resort here) at Cap d'Agde
- inland there are three classified most beautiful villages in the Herault:
25 km north-west of Narbonne is Minerve (see also the village of Aigne, a little to the east of Minerve, and nearby Saint-Chinian)
20 km east of Lodève visit St Guilhem le Desert
40 km north-west of Béziers is Olargues and nearby you can visit the town and gardens at Roquebrun.
Also inland in the Herault are a couple of cave systems that are worth visiting at the Grotte de la Clamouse (near St Guilhem le Desert) and those at Grotte des Demoiselles (in the northernmost part of the department, due north from Montpellier).
