The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
This region, the Languedoc, is France's best kept secret. With its sleepy villages of sun-warmed stones and red tiled roofs, surrounded by magnificent scenery and herb scented hills, it is ideal walking country. It is France’s largest, up-and-coming wine producing region and there are many opportunities to taste its excellent wines.
If you can tear yourself away from such over-abundance of nature's generosity, there are many local places of interest nearby. Or an hour's drive takes you to splendid Roman towns such as Avignon, Nîmes, Arles to the east, stunning Carcassonne and the Cathar castles to the west.
The sandy beach at Meze is only a 10 minute drive. Mediterranean beaches are 20 minutes’ drive and Lac Salagou for fishing and non-motorised water sports, 20 minutes. For a touch of true French sophistication, Montpellier, 40 kms, offers the arts, theatre, shopping, an international airport and train station. The Spanish border is only 1.5 hours' drive.
The Meze area
The sandy beach at Meze is ringed with a wide choice of restaurants which specialise in local seafood.
There are restaurants and supermarkets at Pézenas, 5 kms, which is famous for its antique dealers and big Saturday street market, also a public swimming pool.
Brilliant local markets, concerts and festivals year round include truffle and wine fairs. Private wine domaines hold classical concerts in lovely surroundings during the summer - under the stars in a fabulous chateau courtyard or in an atmospheric wine store - followed by wine tastings

Villa Belle is superbly designed and equipped - a thoroughly modern house [with excellent kitchen] but built in the local traditional style in a tranquil rural setting. Light and airy. Large windows on all sides looking out on to the countryside and glorious sunsets. And modern, comfortable beds. The cleaning, laundry services and television all worked without a hitch - and the ever-helpful British owner [who lives not far away] was always available by phone and responsive if needed. Access is by a dirt road but our bog-standard two-wheel-drive Toyota saloon coped easily. Although the property is relatively isolated, you are just fifteen minutes from the town/port of Mèze, its shops and twice-weekly street market - as well as a Mediterranean coastline dotted with picturesque fishing villages, restaurants, bars and great sea-food. Just one point to note: the house is out of range of the Internet but the owner has installed a device which works through a mobile network on a 'pay as you go' basis. In theory, "15 euros gives you 16 hours of surf time". Our experience was that if you wanted to do more than surf - e.g. download material, send and receive emails with attachments - then those 16 hours were greatly reduced. For people who don't rely on the Internet or require only intermittent access, the system works fine. For those who need it for business or regular access to friends/family, an i-phone or equivalent with Internet connection might be preferable. |
