La maison de vignerons
About the home
Set over four floors, this lovely home from home comes fully equipped. From the ground floor "cave" with washing machine and beachy stuff, to the wonderful terrace on the fourth floor, with chairs, tables and sunbeds, via the spacious lounge with log burner and English T.V., kitchen diner, three spacious double bedrooms, large twin bedroom and two full modern bath/ shower rooms. And you can check your emails on the terrace with the wireless wifi whilst gazing across the Etang.
On the terrace is a useful fridge, barbeque and outside shower, with views over the terracotta rooftops and beyond to the Med. Set in the old part of the town, with narrow roads and cobbled streets, this 200 year old vigneron's house is in the lovely fishing village of Meze, on the shores of the Etang de Thau, where probably the best mussels and oysters in the world are grown.
The village is surrounded by vineyards on one side and the lake on the other, and the house is just 200m from the beach, 200m from the port, 100m from the market. Wine tasting from some great local vineyards is on your doorstep. Meze is only half an hour from France's best loved city, Montpellier, or the Canal du Midi: under an hour from Nimes and Arles, an hour and a half from world heritage site Carcassonne, the artist's haven of Collioure or Lautrec's Albi, a couple of hours from walking or skiing in the Pyrenees.
If you don't want to go anywhere everything is on your doorstep: oysters, mussels, wine, great local fruit and vegtables from the twice weekly markets, as well as concerts throughout the summer months, are all within easy walking distance. There's a sailing school in Meze as well as wind and kite surfing, a cinema, and horse riding, golf and tennis nearby. Or just relax on the terrace with a glass of wine and let the world go by.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
In this sun-drenched corner of the south of France, you'll find sandy beaches lapped by the Mediterranean sea, wild open spaces in the Cevennes hills, monasteries and castles for Languedoc sightseeing, and vineyards where you can taste some of the best Languedoc wines around. Bordering the Mediterranean is about 60 miles of coastline, which stretches between the hauntingly beautiful region known as the Camargue, and the tree-lined Canal du Midi.
The landscape of Herault starts craggy and beautiful in the southern part of the Massif Central and descends gently until it opens like an amphitheatre onto the Mediterranean coast. With its lakes and saltwater lagoons, gorges and rivers, mountains and beaches, sunny climate and cultural attractions as well as towns and cities like Montpellier, Pezenas and Sete there is something for everyone in Herault!
The Meze area
Meze, in the South of France, is situated on the edge of a largesalt water in-land lake (the Etang), separated from the Med by a small spit of beach running from Sete to Marseillan. From this lake in the Languedoc are produced some of the best oysters and mussels for the restaurants of Paris, Nice and Cannes. For holidaymakers however, all you have to do is wander down to the harbour and eat a magnificent meal of fresh sea food at one of the numerous excellent restaurants. There is plenty to do in the immediate area, as well as the safe beach on the Etang (see photos).
A short drive gets you to the Med beaches of Sete or Marseillan Plage. There's plenty for the children including the .Parc Dinosaur a couple of miles away and Aqualand in Agde. Every year in August Meze holds the it's now famous three day world music festival with great bands playing down by the harbour. Also watch out for the water jousting, a unique event to the area, featuring jousters being rowed against each other!, It is taken very seriously.

We just love this house - what a find !! We have stayed here twice in this lovely 3 storey house set in a narrow quaint street in the delightful town of Meze. The house is large and spacious with high quality fittings. We spend most of our time on the gorgeous roof terrace, eating all our meals there. It has a barbeque, fridge, sun loungers and ample dining furniture. The market square is a 2 minute walk away where there is an indoor and outdoor market selling fabulous fresh fish and produce. Beach and harbour is a 5 min walk. The restaurants around the harbour are lovely because you can eat superb food and watch the sun go down over the boats, and if you are lucky to be there for Bastille Day you get to see a fantastic firework display too. Can't recommend this house highly enough - can't wait to go back. |

A great home from home house with plenty of space. The roof terrace is a great place to relax at the end of the day with a wonderful view. The sandy beach, harbour, restaurants and shops are just a short stroll away and there are many other places to explore in and around the area. There is something to suit all ages here - we love it. |

We spent an idyllic week here. David has thought of everything one could possibly need for perfect comfort. The house is spacious and totally comfortable with the best quality beds and sofas. A very short stroll takes you to the beach or the market where you can buy wonderful fresh food and clothes, Anything else you want including the cheapest wine ever is available almost on your doorstep in the local shops. There are games and books in the house and the roof terrace is perfect for sunbathing. If you feel hot you can even have a refreshing shower there on the terrace. If you feel like cooking the exscellent food you have bought, the kitchen has everything you could desire. If you don't want to cook the choice of restaurants in Meze is enormous. I can't recommend this atmospheric house and village highly enough. |
