Hillside
About the home
This is a lovely house, spacious and contemporary, decorated to high standard, with stunning views of village and surrounding countryside. It is in a good location, above the village so that it provides an escape from the noise and the hustle and bustle, but conveniently close to all amenities; the village is but a short - but steep - five minute walk away.
It is spread over 3 floors and has a large, south-facing garden and decking area, that gets sun all day long and into the evening. There are two large double bedrooms, with kingsized beds, a dining room that sits 6, a large kitchen with dishwasher and microwave, and digital radio and a sitting room with 32" Widescreen TV, DVD, a good selection of films and books and an iPod Docking station to play your own music from. There is a family bathroom with wc, basin, bath and over the bath shower, and wetroom hat has a sink, wc and walk in shower. The bedrooms all have good quality beds and mattresses with memory foam toppers, good quality, all season duvets, and clean crisp new bedlinen.
There is ample parking for 3 cars, and those who know Meva know this is a definite bonus, since car parking in the village at high season is a nightmare and is not free!
The house is great for couples who love walking or just looking for an escape, singles and small groups and small families. Eden, Heligan, Fowey are all very close and Truro is about 30km away. The golden beach at Pentewan is just down the road and via the coast path is approx 2 miles. Other equally beautiful beaches are also close by and even the beaches of the north coast are no more than an hour's drive away.
Meva, being a working fishing village is an all-year-round village and it's great any time of year. It's a great base to explore the surrounding area; great in winter for an escape to de-stress and for snuggling up in ; watching storms from the great big picture window in the lounge is a definite experience and I defy you not to loose a few hours in the process. In summer, not only is it a great base but it's an experience in itself with the decking and the views. You'll love returning here to the comfort and facilities and when you're ready for sleep, falling into those big beds.
There is some beautiful countryside around the village and some great coast walks, for all levels of walker. Even if you're not a seasoned walker you can do these walks and the views are truly spectacular. From Meva you can go West over to Portmellon and Goran and East to Pentewan, Carlyon and Charlestown.
Just across the road at the top of the village (where you turn into School Hill) is the road to Heligan, which is a 30 minute walk or a five minute car drive. Eden is 20 minutes by car.
Tea, coffee, milk and a bottle of wine are included in every booking. Please state you preference for red or white wine when booking.
NB: The bedrooms are separated by a floor but are above and below each other. This may be a concern for those with young children. The second bedroom is on the bottom corridor along with the bathroom and shower-room.

Further details indoors:
There is a large sitting room that seats 4+, with widescreen TV, Freeview and DVD, with selection of DVDs chosen by the owner, and an iPod / iPhone docking station so you can bring your own music. The sofa is a sofa bed so if necessary can take sleep another two people. There is an open fire which is mainly decorative, but heating is provided by very effective and modern electric heaters - there is no gas in Mevagissey.
The bedrooms are both large doubles with brand new, high-quality mattresses and all-seasons, micro-fibre (but designed to mimic duck down - catering for those with allergies prevents its use), chest of drawers and double wardrobes.
There is a dining room that seats up to 6 and a large kitchen with all amenities (there's a fondue set if it so takes your fancy..!)
The bathroom has a WC, basin, and over-bath electric shower and the wet room also has basin WC and walk in shower. Both rooms have heaters for when the weather is less clement.
Further details outdoors:
There is a huge garden that's steep so not accessible. However the large decked area overlooks the garden and more than makes up for the lack of access (there are steps down there if you feel brave). The decking has a garden table and seating for 4-6. The decking also has lights so you can sit out way past sunset if desired.
There is also a pond which last year had frog spawn in, but it's not deep and is mainly decorative.
On a summer night there really is no better place to be, than on the decking of Kiln Close, a plate of nibbles and a bottle of wine, whilst watching the sunset over the village.
Further details
All bed and bath linen is provided. However use of bath linen outside of the house, for beach use for example, is stricly prohibited.
If there is anything you have a question about or that you can't see here, please don't be afraid to ask.

The West Country / Cornwall region

Cornish locals will tell you that Cornwall has its own climate and that the weather always confounds and contradicts the weather reports. It rarely gets really cold but it can get stormy and wet. And in the summer, if you get the weather, there really is no better place to visit. But Cornwall and particularly the South Coast is a great place to visit at any time of year and in any weather. It is steeped in history and has some stunning scenery.
The Mevagissey area
Mevagissey, is on Cornwall's south coast, and the name refers to the town of St Meva and St Issey, first recorded as a hamlet in 1313. A picturesque, unique 14th Century fishing Village located on the South Cornwall Coast at the end of a Valley close to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project.
The fishing village of Mevagissey and the still smaller haven of Gorran are the very essence of a Cornwall which has remained true to its roots and embraced change only slowly. Both names belong to 6th century Irish missionaries.
Meva is "open" year round and unlike some other villages, still has a thriving local industry and community. There are little craft and art shops, which sit side by side min-markets, cafes and pubs, that suit all tastes. It is still a working fishing village and you will see the fishing boats in the harbour.
The nearby Parish of Gorran Haven is one of the gems of South Cornwall. There are two village beaches which are amongst the safest in the County making them ideal for the whole family.
Mevagissey's labyrinth of tiny streets twist and turn past ancient dwarf buildings of cob and slate but inexorably for the twin harbours which are its nerve centre, a place to watch the fisherman land their catch and mend their nets as they have since John Trewollas built the first pier in 1430.
There are a number of old and historic pubs in the town where traditional ales and good fresh dishes, especially fish-dishes (from the daily catch) are served. Alongside this there are also modern and more formal restaurants serving fine, modern European food. And for traditionalists, the fish and chips on the harbour can't be beaten.
Amenities-wise, there is a chemist, a doctor's surgery, a couple of cafes, a traditional sweet shop, two mini markets, artists galleries, the obligatory pasty shop and arts and crafts shops.
There are great walks along the coast path to Goran and Portmellon in one direction and Pentewan, Carlyon and Charlestown in the other. There is also cycle hire and water sports at Pentewan. In the summer the beach at Pentewan is a great sunbathing spot.

Good accomodation with a 5 minute walk to local amenities. Located in a quiet residential street with private parking and superb views over the village/harbour, especially from the decking area at the rear of the property. Well decorated and furnished with large comfortable beds and plenty of storage. A steep walk up/down to the village, but no problem for the average person. Not suitable for disabled persons or those with difficulty walking. An excellent base for exploring Mevagissey and the surrounding area, with plenty child friendly pubs, etc close by. All round good accomodation that I would definitely recommend. Well priced for the standard and location. |
Guestbook for Hillside
"What a fantastic house!! Excellent facilities in the house and we found the beds extremely comfortable. We cam out of season so the village was quiet but the choice of DVDs and books kept us entertained." Andy & Dee, Jan 2011
"We've had a really lovely few days in Mevagissey.... exploring all the little shops. The house is really lovely and comfortable. We definitely will visit again, and will definitely recommend Hillside to friends and family." Helen and Rick. October 2010

"The house is great, really comfortable and the view from the living room is wonderful. The milk and the wine are a lovely touch. We have enjoyed our time immensely and would be very happy to come back again. There is still so much to explore." Wang, Jenny and Hayley, October 2010
"Having stayed in many holiday cottages around Cornwall, I have to say that Hillside is a class above the rest. The house is tastefully decorated and contemporary with lots of small touches that make a big difference… the modern showers (two of them!), the big flatscreen TV, the collection of DVDs, the iPod dock and, not to mention, a FOUR slice toaster! Outside, the views over Mevagissey from the decking (and the lounge and bedroom windows) are stunning. Mevagissey is a great base from which to explore Cornwall and we had a wonderful two weeks here. A real home from home. Will definitely recommend to friends and family". P Simpkins, Oct 2010
"We really had a lovely time in this clean, stylish and well equipped house. Having somewhere nice to come home to after a long day exploring really makes all the difference and this house leaves you wanting nothing." J. Sinclair, Aug 2010.
We've had a great week here at Mevagissey, helped by a clean, well-equipped house in a fantastic location. The kids loved looking around all of the shops.. Our trips to Newquay Zoo, Tintagel, Eden, Heligan, Fowey (on the ferry!), Bodmin Jail, St Mawes, Mousehole, Penzance and Lands End were all very enjoyable and worthwhile." Graeme, Michelle, Lucy and Rachel. Newcastle-upon-tyne. July 2010
"How fast the week has gone! Thank you so much, Hillside is a credit to you! It has quickly become a home from home and we are both quite sad to be leaving it. Sunny evenings sat out on the decking have been a real highlight and the wine was a kind touch. Thank you." Malcolm and Elaine, July 2010
"Have had a lovely week in a lovely house. Thank you!" Alison, David, Leesa, Phil and baby Daisy. July 2010
"It's the small touches that make the difference: the WiFi, the iPod dock, the modern showers, etc all added to the enjoyment and the relaxation.. Sure we wanted a break but we live in a modern world and have standards. This house had everything we needed and we really could find nothing to complain about". Rahul and Sally, June 2010.
"Communication from Jane before arriving was specific and detailed and she has been nothing but helpful and friendly..she has a genuine love for this property and cares if people have a good time....which proves it's more than a holiday home..it's a love affair with Mevagissey! We will definitely be back...we love it too...!" Rachel and Kevin, Cardiff, May 2010
"Looking at the guest book, there's not much more I can add. I just say "ditto". We can't recommend this place enough and will tell all our friends and family to make sure they visit." S. Thomas, London, March 2010
"We had a lovely time in Mevagissey, despite some truly woeful weather! Hillside has been a wonderful place to stay in and we have looked forward to being able to come back to the comfort and warmth of the cottage (sic) at the end of the day. I would definitely recommend to friends and family". Linda, Bob, Becka and Mark, Oxford. Nov 09
"We have had a truly fantastic holiday and Hillside has been a great home from home to relax in and to simply stop and watch the world go by. The extra touches are most welcome (wine, milk, tea, etc) and nothing has been too much trouble for Jane and Rachel (owner and housekeeper)... We will definitely be recommending to friends and family." F Mcintosh, Sep 09
"Mevagissey is a beautiful village with plenty to do. Judes does some great French fries. The house is perfect with great views and great location. Will definitely recommend to friends and family. AND we will be returning" Rebecca, James and Wills, July 09
"Jane has raised the bar when it comes to holiday lets in England. Previously we've struggled to find anything better equipped or as tasteful. The range of DVDs, the WiFi connection and the iPod speakers are a lovely touch and brings holiday letting into the 21st century. Coming from Norway we didn't know what to expect but we were not disappointed, except perhaps for the weather. We will most definitely return" . N. Fjortoft, Norway, July 2009
"The property was lovely. Really nicely decorated and finished and the view was gorgeous from the living room window. We were glad that it did look exactly like the pictures. It had everything we needed for a really enjoyable week. Due to the lovely weather we were able to sit out on the decking and enjoy the peace (besides a few seagulls) and the view and read some of the selection of books available. We found the location really good for it to be in easy access the village and to reach other parts of Cornwall." G. Hartley, July 2009
"This property is great - everything in it is brand new and stylish and it couldn't be a nicer place to spend your time while you're exploring Mevagissey and the surrounding area. There's a great selection of DVDs and books just in case you get a rainy day. The deck in the garden and the windows from the bedrooms and lounge provide great views over the centre of Meva and the water. Top notch. " Jason, London. April 2009
"Without doubt Hillside is very comfortable and finished to a high standard and the deck outside was delightful. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and clearly we have similar taste in movies and books as we enjoyed several late afternoons cosily watching TV. Would gladly recommend Hillside to anyone ... " C Smyth, Derbyshire
"A beautiful and well-equipped house that provided a perfect base for our Cornish adventure. The extra touches and the care clearly taken by the owner were an extra nice touch. Jane and Rachel (the housekeeper) were at pains to make sure we were happy and had all we need. " B Timmons, London. June 2009
We've had a lovely week here in Mevagissey. The house has been wonderful; great location and very well equipped, not to mention the lovely terrace and gorgeous, contemporary interior...... The food has been amazing and the puddings out of this world. Would definitely come back and will recommend the house to friends and family." Lucy and Tom, July 09
"We've had a lovely time his this beautiful house, having stayed in more than usual due to the dismal weather. The range of DVDs served us well. (when we did get sun) The patio and view reminded us of why we love Mevagissey and why we'll return." Becca, Martin and baby James, July 09
"House very clean and well furnished. Definitely above the normal standard. Highly recommend Roovrays restaurant (in the village). Would recommend this accommodation to friends and family." Mr & Mrs Leggett, July 09
"Great week had by all in this great, family friendly, home from home." Jane, Keith, Emily and Harry, July 09
