Home description

Gorgeous, spacious and decorated to high standard, with stunning views of village and surrounding countryside, this is an excellent location close to local amenities (the village is a five minute walk away). The house is spread over 3 floors and has a large, south-facing garden and decking area, that gets sun all day long and into the evening.

At entry level is the the large kitchen to your right and the dining room to your left. Immediately ahead are the short flights of stairs to upper and lower levels. On the top level are the rooms with the best views, the master bedroom and the sitting room; the lower level has the second bedroom and the bathrooms.

The house is great for couples who love walking or just looking for an ecape, singles and small groups and small families.

There is ample parking for 3 cars, and those who know Meva know this is a definite bonus, since car parking in the village is a nightmare (particuarly in Summer) and is not free! Eden, Heligan, Fowey are all very close and Truro is about 30km away. The golden beach at Pentewan is just down the road and via the coast path is approx 2 miles.

Only recently renovated, Hillside is a lovely house, is bright and airy and has a lovely peaceful and tranquil feel. If you like the cramped, falling apart and ramshackle nature of a little cottage, this house is not for you. If you like things more spacious, more modern contemporary, with great facilities, this is just the house for you.

A great base to explore the surrounding area all year round, It's great in winter for snuggling up in - watching storms from the great big picture window in the lounge is a definite experience and I defy you not to loose a few hours in the process - and in summer, not only is it a great base but it's an experience in itself with the decking and the views. You'll love returning here a the end of a busy and action packed day. Imagine de-stressing, watching the sun go down with a glass of wine (or your beverage of choice) and some nice fresh fish, bought locally.

And when you're de-stressed, relaxed and happy, climb into a king-size bed, with high-grade mattress, between crisp, fresh linen, and plump pillows. You'll truly never want to leave.

There is some beautiful countryside around the village and some great coast walks, for all levels of walker. Even if you're not a seasoned walker you can do these walks and the views are truly spectacular. From Meva you can go West over to Portmellon and Goran and East to Pentewan, Carlyon and Charlestown.

Just across the road at the top of the village (were you turn into School Hill) is the road to Heligan, which is a 30 minute walk or a five minute car drive. Eden is 20 minutes by car.

Tea, coffee, milk and a bottle of wine are included in every booking. Please state you preference for red or white wine when booking.

NB: The bedrooms are separated by a floor but are above and below each other. This may be a concern for those with young children. The second bedroom is on the bottom corridor along with the bathroom and shower-room.

The West Country / Cornwall region

The locals will tell you that Cornwall has its own climate and that the weather always confounds and contradicts the weather reports. When it's cold it's freezing, when it's raining it's raining hard, but when it's sunny, it's glorious; when it's crips, it's romantic. But Cornwall and particularly the South Coast is a great place to visit at any time of year and in any weather. If it's raining and inclement, what better excuse to hole yourself up indoors in front of a log fire with a good book or just watch the view?

Mevagissey area

Mevagissey refers to the town of St Meva and St Issey, first recorded as a hamlet in 1313. A picturesque, unique 14th Century fishing Village located on the South Cornwall Coast at the end of a Valley close to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project.

The nearby Parish of Gorran Haven is one of the gems of South Cornwall. There are two village beaches which are amongst the safest in the County making them ideal for the whole family.

The fishing village of Mevagissey and the still smaller haven of Gorran are the very essence of a Cornwall which has remained true to its roots and embraced change only slowly. Both names belong to 6th century Irish missionaries.

Mevagissey's labyrinth of tiny streets twist and turn past ancient dwarf buildings of cob and slate but inexorably for the twin harbours which are its nerve centre, a place to watch the fisherman land their catch and mend their nets as they have since John Trewollas built the first pier in 1430.

There are a number of old and historic pubs in the town where traditional ales and good fresh dishes, especially fish-dishes (from the daily catch) are served. Alongside this there are also modern and more formal restaurants serving modern European food. And for traditionalists, the fish and chips on the harbour can't be beaten.

There are great walks along the coast path to Goran and Portmellon in one direction and Pentewan, Carlyon and Charlestown in the other. There is also cycle hire and water sports at Pentewan. In the summer the beach at Pentewan is a great sunbathing spot.

Driving is obviously the easiest but you can get trains into St Austell, which is approx. 9km away, and there are buses that bring you straight into the village Meva. A taxi will cost about £15.

Further details indoors:
There is a large sitting room that seats 4+, with widescreen TV with Freeview and DVD, with selection of DVDs chosen by the owner, and an iPod / iPhone docking station so you can bring your own music. The sofa is a sofa bed so if necessary can take sleep another two people. There is an open fire which can be lit, but is currently decorative, since we're approachign spring / summer season.

The bedrooms are both large doubles with brand new, high-quality mattresses and all-seasons, micro-fibre (but designed to mimic duck down - catering for those with allergies prevents its use), chest of drawers and double wardrobes.

There is a dining room that seats up to 6 and a large kitchen with all amenities (there's a fondue set if it so takes your fancy..!)

The bathroom has a WC, basin, and over-bath electric shower and the wet room also has basin WC and walk in shower. Both rooms have heaters for when the weather is less clement.

Further details outdoors:
There is a huge garden but it's built into the hillside so not easily accessible. However the large decked area overlooks the garden and more than makes up for the lack of access (there are steps down there if you feel brave). The decking has a garden table and seating for 4-6 with parasol and soon to arrive barbecue and wood burner. The decking also has lights so you can sit out way past sunset if desired. However the house has neighbours on either side so noise is strongly discouraged.

There is also a pond which last year had frog spawn in, but it's not deep and is mainly decorative.

On a summer night there really is no better place to be, than on the decking of Kiln Close, a plate of nibbles and a bottle of wine, whilst watching the sunset over the village.

Further details

All bed and bath linen is provided. However use of bath linen outside of the house, for beach use for example, is stricly prohibited.

If there is anything you have a question about or that you can't see here, please don't be afraid to ask.

Guestbook for Hillside

"Jane has raised the bar when it comes to holiday lets in England. Previously we've stuggled to find anything better equipped or as tasteful. The range of DVDs, the WiFi connection and the iPod speakers are a lovely touch and brings holiday letting into the 21st century. Coming from Norway we didn't know what to expect but we were not disappointed, except perhaps for the weather. We will most definitely return" . N. Fjortoft, Norway, July 2009

"The property was lovely. Really nicely decorated and finished and the view was gorgeous from the living room window. We were glad that it did look exactly like the pictures. It had everything we needed for a really enjoyable week. Due to the lovely weather we were able to sit out on the decking and enjoy the peace (besides a few seagulls) and the view and read some of the selection of books available. We found the location really good for it to be in easy access the village and to reach other parts of cornwall." G. Hartley, July 2009

"This property is great - everything in it is brand new and stylish and it couldn't be a nicer place to spend your time while you're exploring Mevagissey and the surrounding area. There's a great selection of DVDs and books just in case you get a rainy day. The deck in the garden and the windows from the bedrooms and lounge provide great views over the centre of Meva and the water. Top notch. Make sure you explore the shortcut into town - its not that easy to find but the owner of the house will point you towards it." Jason, London. April 2009

"My wife and I really loved this place and what a beautiful house. The nicest we've stayed in. We'd never been to Cornwall before and wanted to explore the area. We weren't disappointed!. We had the place booked for a week but were only planning to stay for a few days. We stayed the whole week. We would totally recommend it.! Bob. London / Washington DC. March 2009

"Without doubt Hillside is very comfortable and finished to a high standard and the deck outside was delightful. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and clearly we have similar taste in movies and books as we enjoyed several late afternoons cosily watching TV. Would gladly recommend Hillside to anyone ... " C Smyth, Derbyshire

"A beautiful and well-equipped house that provided a perfect base for our Cornish adventure." B Timmons, London. July 2009
