The Marche region
Le Marche has a varied terrain with charming hill towns and villages, fantastic food, miles of beaches and friendly people. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty with designated nature parks. The Adriatic coast is famous for it's beaches, Rimini, Gabbicce Mare, Pesaro, Fano (5 minutes drive), Senigallia (15 minutes away). The Conero beaches further south are spectacular too. There are also lots of intimate beaches closer at hand for you to enjoy. Look out for cars parked along the roadside and you can be sure a beach is nearby. Just follow the locals! Go and explore some of the nearby towns and villages inland, where local traditions remain intact.
SLOW FOOD MOVEMENT
Le Marche is well-known for its delicious food, and the 'slow food' movement. There are small towns and villages to explore, each with their own food specialties and traditional 'cucina povera'. In the summer there are many eating places around here. THE TRUFFLE SEASON (Oct to Dec) is an ideal time to visit.
Pesaro is the birthplace of composer Giocchino Rossini and is only a 20 minute drive away. You can also visit the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro in August, and the composers home is now a museum. There are lots of opera and music concerts in this province. A short bus ride will take you to the UNESCO town of Urbino, a medieval hilltop university town well worth a visit. There are many lovely hilltop towns in the area.
WONDERFULLY SUNNY WEATHER
Le Marche has a mild climate and sunny skies. In spring, early and late summer temperatures are warm without being unbearably hot (20 to 30 degrees). The busiest and hottest month is August when the Italians come to the coast to enjoy the beaches (30 to 40 degrees). You will enjoy a number of free outdoor festivals and concerts organised during the peak periods, which ensure that tourists are treated to a wealth of local culture, sights and sounds.
You can drive to Rome in approx two and a half hours. Get a Bus to the medieval hilltop town of Urbino, which is really worth a visit. The Republic of San Marino, Venice and Verona are also near enough for day trips. Assissi, the birth place of St Francis, is in this area. The Frassassi Caves are quite spectacular and worth a visit. Go to San Leo, San Costanzo, Barchi, Casteleone di Suaza, Acqualagna, St Angleo in Pontano.........
A small community next to the coast and farmland. Situated between Fano and Senigallia on the SS16, Metaurilia is a friendly place with a cafe bar, church, hairdresser, breadshop, pannini bar and a number of excellent local restaurants.
You could visit a different beach every day of the week if you wished without travelling for more than 10 minutes. All of the local beaches are very friendly and are used by local families.
THE NEAREST BEACH IS A 5 MINUTE WALK. You can nip back for lunch and a nap which is ideal for July and August, especially if you have young children and want to keep them out of the sun between 12 and 3pm. Can't bear to move from the beach? Have your lunch there, it is excellent value and quality and the owners of the beach are very friendly and helpful.
FANTASTIC FRESH LOCAL FOOD
The local area boasts a number of excellent restaurants, the nearest being 2 minutes walk away! In the summer there are numerous restaurants within a five minute drive which serve fantastic food, and the area is well-known for fish. It is a 10 minute drive along the SS16 to Fano, and 20 minutes from Senigallia and Pesaro for more excellent restaurants, shops and historic centres. Fano Port and Beach area is lively in the summer. There are numerous beach areas between Metaurilia and Pesaro which have eating places in the summer which means you really will be spoilt for choice. HIGH CLASS DINING FOR FISH DISHES WITHIN 2 MINUTE WALK.
Eating at home? There is a IperCoop hypermarket 15 minutes drive south which has all the food you could ever want including fresh fish, meat and pasta, and there is also a local supermarket just over the bridge in Metaurilia, and a shop which sells fresh local produce direct from the farm and local good and cheap wines. You won't be able to resist the Italian ice-cream from the Gelateria which is made on the premises by artisan producers. Try Pesaro and sit and people watch or go to Torette and sit in the Gelateria overlooking the beach and enjoy an icecream or Campari and soda whilst watching the sun sink in the sky. I defy you not to enjoy it!!
The apartment is right on the edge of the countryside making it very popular with cyclists and walkers. The Sibbillini mountains and nature reserves are easily accessible by car. Or get out the map and explore the local towns and villages by foot or bicycle.
TRUFFLE FAIRS FROM OCTOBER TO DECEMBER are an Autumn highlight, go to FOSSOMBRONE

"non proprio come ce l'aspettavamo"
la casa non è male, è arredata con gusto in realtà, il problema è che sembra una casa abbandonata, il giardino, per noi importante avendo due bambine piccole è incolto, nel senso di sommerso di e… More

"OK - but not sure Id go back"
We stayed here for a week in August and while the apartment is a good size and in a good location, as it is I'm not sure we'd go back. The owner relies on the guests to clean the apartment when they leave, and this is where our problems started. When we arrived it was quite clear the people before us hadn't cleaned the apartment so I had to spend 3 or 4 hours cleaning other people's dirt. They had also left a lot of food in the cupboards, fridge and freezer so we had to dispose of all of that.
The owner hadn't been to the apartment for many months and as such the 2 terraces were overgrown and full of rubbish - definitely not somewhere where I'd be comfortable letting my children play. The rug in the living room was also filthy and couldn't be lifted which was annoying as I didn't want my baby crawling on it.
The last problem which didn't really affect us but may put others off is that there is an Alsatian dog which lives in a big cage/kennel less than 5m from the front door. It barked quite a lot, especially in the evening or when you walked past it.
I am sorry the people before you did not leave the apartment clean. This is only the second time this has been a problem in 5 years. It was made clear to you that I do rely on all guests to leave the place clean and tidy and you were happy to make the booking on this basis. Although it has meant inconvenience to you this time, it has worked really well for 5 years and does allow me to keep the rental price low, which you benefited from. I have refunded £30 to you for your trouble.

"Excellent location, very quiet but near amenities"
This apartment is perfect for a holiday near the Adriatic sea. It is well equipped and in a quiet location. The nearest beach is lovely and the apartment is also near Fano, again with lovely beaches and shopping.
Sharon (owner) always communicates quickly and has been flexible with arrival dates (we usually stay out of season)
This was our fourth or fifth stay here.
Thank you for your lovely review. I have had lots of similar comments from other guests. They particularly like the convenient location and wonderful places to eat in the local area. I look forward to welcoming you back in 2012.

"Comfortable, great value base to experience Italian beach life and culture"
We enjoyed a superb week in "La Lanterna", in which each of the family was able to get all they want from a holiday. The apartment is comfortable and well-equipped with everything we needed. The small, herb-filled garden at the front and the larger terrace to sit out and eat at the back were a bonus. With the local beaches just five minutes' walk away, some time was spent there each day, or at one of the many others along the coast (we particularly liked Sirolo on the Conero peninsula). We would recommend a car for the quick, easy access it gives to beautiful towns and countryside inland - Urbino is a must, but we also enjoyed the Gola del Furlo, Fossembrone, Corinaldo and the spectacular Frasassi caves. A proper Italian holiday experience, off the beaten track for most UK visitors, but one we thoroughly recommend.
It was good to hear that you all enjoyed the apartment and this part of Italy so much. It really is an unspoilt corner isn't it? I look forward to welcoming you again.
