About this location
The Turkish Aegean Coast region
The combination of stunning scenery and numerous ancient sites makes the Turquoise Coast of Turkey the perfect place for a holiday.
Relaxing in unspoilt beauty and taking dips in famous turquoise waters or discovering the beauty of the peninsula - the choice is yours.
The Greek philosopher Strabon said, "God would send his beloved servants to Datça to live longer".
Datça Peninsula is a prized location for tourists because of the beauty of its many coves and bays with crystal clear waters which are favoured ports of call for those undertaking the celebrated Blue Cruise along Turkey's spectacular Turquoise coast.
Datca is also famous for its high oxygen level in the air and the low humidity. Even in the hottest summer months, a gentle breeze will ensure a pleasant holiday. The sea and the coast line are stunningly beautiful and there are plenty quiet little bays where you can enjoy the peace and beauty.
At the very tip of the peninsula the ancient Carian city of Knidos (Cnidus), home of the Cnidian Aphrodite stands, described by Strabon as "a city that was built for the most beautiful of goddesses, Aphrodite, on the most beautiful of peninsulas." Famous as a centre of art and culture in the fourth century B.C. the city had two harbours: one on the Aegean and the other on the Mediterranean. The remains of a circular temple dedicated to the goddess of love overlook the two harbours; go and have a swim in the same waters that Aphrodite used to swim.
Activities and excursions available :
- Sailing and Diving : There are many bays, some of which are only accessible by sea that you can visit by hiring a boat.
- Walking and cycling : The inland is very beautiful and it is worth discovering on foot or on a bike. You will enjoy the scenery and the olive and almond groves and meet friendly local people.
- A visit to one of the Greek islands: Kos, Simi or Rhodos. Regular departures from Datça city by boat.
- A day trip to the lively Turkish resort Bodrum (in the summer you can take the the ferry boat which operates every day).
- A day trip to Marmaris.
- A boat excursion along the beautiful coast of the peninsula.
- A visit to "Eski Datça" (old Datça).
- A visit to the antique Kaunos with its rocky burial tombs and the turtle island at Dalyan.
- And the local bazaar held on Saturdays where you can find local fresh food as well as handcrafts, jewellery, etc..
A couple of articles on Datca:
The Telegraph (27 Jan 2007):
The Datca peninsula - The Turkish coast still has some gorgeous, unspoilt stretches. A good example is the Datca peninsula. Several specialist tour operators have expanded their programmes to cover this almost insular, rugged finger of land, with its pine forests and olive groves, traditional villages and empty beaches.
The Guardian (Saturday January 21 2006):
...I'd say Turkey is positively good for your health - especially if you happen to stay on the unspoilt Datca peninsula, where the oxygen-rich air is said to be the secret of the locals' longevity. That, and the rugged pine-covered hills, olive groves and almond trees, the gorgeous aquamarine sea, the organic honey, fresh fish, pomegranates, figs and red wine - all good stuff for body and soul.

"Well appointed villa with wonderful views in an unspoilt part of Turkey"
We really enjoyed our week in this beautiful, unspoilt area. The villa is very well appointed and comfortable. The pool, the garden setting and and the views down to the sea and of the surrounding hills, are all lovely. The owners Gurhan and Fusun were very kind and welcoming with lots of advice about the local area. We really appreciated Fusun's home baking, the oranges picked warm from the trees and the freshly laid eggs from the chickens in the garden, that Gurhan brought us.
There are many coves and beaches to explore with swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear water. We enjoyed exploring the countryside although the roads are not always for the faint hearted ! The ancient city of Knidos is well worth a visit, as are Old Datca and the port of Datca and there are several restaurants within a short drive.
Thank you Gurhan and Fusun for your hospitality.
