The Sicily region
"To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything...The things that enchant you cannot be counted." (J.W. Goethe, “Italian Journey”, 1873)
Sicily is one of the Mediterranean’s most intriguing destinations, unique unto itself rather than a mere “part of Italy”. The island's landscape and sights are as diverse as its people, offering a fascinating mix of cultures imbued with a southern-Italian passion for life. The coastline alternates between sandy beaches and jagged outcrops, leading in towards the hills and plateaus of the interior, dominated by Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna. The land is scattered with ruins from every era of the island's history, and much of the terrain is turned to agriculture. Its strategic mid-Mediterranean location made it the coveted prize of many an empire and centuries of invasion by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, French and Spanish left behind indelible marks on the island’s cultural landscape.
Owing to its ease of access to the motorway (2 km), the villa is ideally located to explore eastern Sicily, including Tindari with its lakes, Sanctuary and Greek-Roman remains, the picturesque fishing village of Cefalù, the charming Milazzo and Capo D’Orlando with their stunning beaches, the medieval town of Taormina, Mount Etna volcano, the Aeolian Islands, the hill towns of the Nebrodi nature reserve and the UNESCO-protected baroque towns of Siracusa, Modica, Ragusa and Noto… thousands of years of history in one island!
The island's gastronomic heritage reflects a melting pot of influences and an endless array of exciting recipes, while the mild, sunny Mediterranean climate makes travelling in Sicily pleasant all year round.
Messina / Serro area
Villa Anna is set in a quiet haven yet close to the spectacular beaches and attractions of eastern Sicily. Just 5 minutes drive (2 km) down the hill are the coastal towns of Villafranca Tirrena, with its sandy beaches, shops and restaurants, and Ortoliuzzo with its beautiful sandy beach. Here you can sunbath or swim in the crystal-clear warm waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea which make swimming pleasant from mid-April through October. The villa is within easy driving distance from the breathtaking sandy beaches of Milazzo (25 mins drive) and Tindari (35 mins drive), with its extraordinary sandy “tongues” (a sandbank stretching 1.5km into the sea which is now a nature reserve). Just past Tindari is the charming seaside resort of Capo d'Orlando, with its magnificent sandy beaches and turquoise waters, while the stunning Aeolian Islands are only a short hop on the hydrofoil from Milazzo, making it ideal for a day trip.
Apart from the beaches there are numerous attractions within easy driving distance of the property including the stunning medieval town of Taormina (40 mins drive), Tindari (35 mins drive), one of the most interesting archaeological sites in Sicily, with its magnificent Sanctuary and Greek-Roman remains, the Nebrodi nature reserve (1 hour drive) with its wonderful walking routes and unspoiled hill towns. Also very easily accomplished are day trips to the charming Cefalù and to Mount Etna volcano, which are a little over 1 hour's drive away. A visit to the small hill-top village of Serro (a 10 mins walk from the property) will give you a unique opportunity to sample rural Sicilian life as it has been lived for centuries.

Further details indoors: The villa is on two levels. The front entrance takes you into a spacious open hall including dining and sitting areas with woodburning fireplace. Off this living area is a good-size and fully equipped kitchen, with access to the shaded veranda and the garden. The ground floor also features a double bedroom with queen size bed and a bathroom with shower. Some stairs take you to the first floor which is home to a sitting area with sofa-bed, a double bedroom with queen size bed, a bedroom with twin beds and a bathroom with shower. The two bedrooms boast spectacular countryside and sea views. The interior is fully furnished with a warm and simple decor. Air conditioning is fitted in the three bedrooms and in the living area.
Further details outdoors: Located at 200 metres above sea level, Villa Anna is immersed in a peaceful open countryside with the fabulous panorama of the northern Sicilian coast. The secluded outside space includes a barbecue area and a wooden pergola (with direct access to the kitchen), which is ideal for al-fresco dining while taking in the breathtaking views across the garden, the countryside and the sea. The front garden, filled with Mediterranean plants and trees, also features a sunny sitting area with spectacular views and dramatic sunset over the Tyrrhenian sea and, on a good day, all seven Aeolian islands can be clearly seen. The surrounding private grounds of over 8000 square metres are filled with olive groves and fruit trees including a vineyard…. there is always fresh fruit to be picked, whatever the season! The estate also produces an excellent olive oil. In October the olives are hand-picked and cold pressed in the old traditional way, our guests are welcome to see the operations first hand! Note that Villa Anna enjoys a secluded location and car hire is therefore strongly recommended. Ample and secure parking is available within the estate.
