Home description
« Les Mouettes » is situated in the charming seaside village of Meschers, just a few minutes south of Royan and St. Georges de Didonne. There is a two minute walk from the house to the nearest beach, La Plage des Nonnes, this is a beautiful sheltered cove, surrounded by the typical cliffs of Meschers. The town centre and port are very close, easy to walk or cycle.
In Meschers there is a daily market where one can buy delicious fresh fish and seafood, lots of fresh local fruit and vegetables. The Super U has a good range of food, wine, cheese etc. The local bakers provide fresh bread, croissants, cakes every day. From the port of Meschers one can hire bikes, (great fun as there are hardly any hills), arrange boat trips to fish or for sight seeing, there are several restaurants, including “La Fôret” which serves delicious food at very good value, and “La Caravelle” on the port, seafood and local cuisine.
The house is set in its own garden, fully fenced off, lots of flowering bushes, flowers and lavender. A beautiful old Cedar tree provides shade to eat outside on the terrace. There is an outside table and chairs, parasols and sunbeds provided, also a barbeque. There is a private shady parking area

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
In the area you have the beautiful villages of the estuary to visit, just a five minute drive to the medieval village of Talmont, the flowers, the ancient church is very beautiful and peaceful, lots of arty crafty shops, restaurants and cafés.
A little further down the road is St. Seurin d’Uzet, charming port, Camarguais horses and foals in the salt plains by the port. Try the local caviar, this is one of the only villages in France to make caviar from sturgeon out of the estuary.
Just a little further on you will come to Mortagne sur Gironde, another beautiful port scrambling down the typical cliffs of this part of the world. The views over the Gironde estuary are lovely, you can see Blaye and the Médoc. Go mad and have the lobster at the Restaurant du Port, (price per 100 grammes of lobster), it’s devine and worth every penny, otherwise all their menus are good, very friendly welcome.
The seaside resorts of Royan and St. Georges are five/ten minutes up the coast, “la Grande Côte” with kilometres of sandy beach, is north of Royan, the Atlantic rollers often present, to surf or body board. The Zoo at La Palmyre is well worth a visit.
This area is famous for its Pineau, (a local Cognac based aperitif drink) and Cognac brandy, there are many places to visit and taste these drinks.
Meschers-sur-Gironde area
Meschers-sur Gironde is a typical Atlantic coast seaside village, which is lively and always has things going on during the summer period. There is a daily market where as well as fresh fish and produce you can find local craftspeople displaying their wares. There are 4 beautiful beaches, La Plage du Cadet, des Nonnes, des Vergnes and Suzac, all worth a visit.
The beach, “La Plage des Nonnes” is our closest beach, only two minutes walk from the house, literally turn left out of the gate, left up the tiny lane, “rue des Lauriers” and you can see the sea !! It is a sheltered sandy cove, a decent sized beach which has regulary been awarded the the European Blue Flag for quality and cleanliness, (2007). During the season there is sailing from the beach.
There are two restaurants, “Tina’s Café” and “El Surf”, both provide food, Tina’s is Tex Mex, very good, all home made, live music and very friendly atmosphere. There is music and hot and cold snacks at the “El Surf”. We bought the house April 2001 and have totally refurbished it to be our own holiday home, so is extra special for us.
We provide boules, spend an evening learning how to play boules, “Pastis” is essential, though if you don’t like the taste of aniseed, try the local rosé! There are tennis courts nearby, within walking distance.
