The Normandy / Calvados region

Normandy is a beautiful region with wide, golden sandy beaches and gentle rolling hills inland. Famous for its Camembert and cider, Normandy offers many gastronomic delights and in particular, the fiery apple liqueur which is named for the Calvados region. Sea food lovers will be thrilled with the fresh fish and shellfish which is available everywhere. Climate-wise the region is similar to Cornwall, with a light breeze and good amounts of sunshine during the summer months. Winters are mild and wet and a walk on the beach in December is guaranteed to blow the cobwebs away!
The area is steeped in history from William the Conqueror's birthplace in Falaise, his Abbaye des Hommes and Abbaye des Dames, built by his wife Mathilde in Caen, to the famous tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings in the mediaeval town of Bayeux. The mediaeval chateau at Crevecoeur puts on jousting tournaments which are great fun for all the family. In Merville you will find La Redoute, a Napoleonic fort built by Vauban to protect the coast from invasion by the English and further afield, the ancient port of Honfleur, one of the Cinque Ports, reflects the importance of sea trade to the area's historical development.
The impact of the D-Day landings which took place on June 6th, 1944 can be seen everywhere and Le Pin Sable gives easy access to key sites such as the Pegasus Bridge, the Mulberry harbour at Arromanches, Port en Bessin and Omaha Beach. The American cemetery just above Omaha beach has an excellent museum which is free and is particularly moving.
The Merville Franceville Plage area
Every Thursday through the summer there is a large market in the village with fresh produce including cheeses, sausage/dried meats, fresh fish and fantastic fresh herbs and soft fruits. On several Sundays through the summer there is a huge brocante market where you can pick up anything from a WWII helmet complete with bullet hole to antique coffee grinders.
For children, there is mini-golf, sailing school (hobie cats, windsurfing, kayaking - 5 min drive) , swimming lessons, archery and various activities organised by the local tourist office. We can arrange prior booking for these.
Information on organised activities, including firework celebrations (14th July, 15 August), live music, and nature walks, can be obtained from the tourist office in the village. For an exciting day out Festyland provides fairground rides and entertainment about 25 mins drive away. In nearby Cabourg there is a pony club for riding lessons and hacks.
For more adventurous watersports enthusiasts there is kitesurfing (15 min walk) and wake boarding (10 min drive). Golfers can play in Le Home Varaville and Cabourg or venture further afield to Deauville and Omaha Beach. Bird watchers can enjoy the nature reserve at Sallenelles (5 min drive) and book to watch birds at La Maison des Marais, a private reserve in the middle of the marshes (20 mins).
The Merville Battery (10 mins walk) recreates one of the first battles on 6th June 1944 as paratroopers fought to neutralise the guns trained on Sword Beach prior to the landings. 10 mins drive away are the Pegasus Bridge which has an excellent museum and Ranville Cemetery.

Guestbook for Le Pin Sable
We had the most fantastic week, with the warmest weather all year! In the high 20's all week! We all enjoyed the house and garden, and William had great fun with the toys, books and especially the sand pit. We highly recommend the zoo at Cerza for a great family day out. Spent lovely afternoons on the beach watching hundreds of people collecting clams at the water's edge. Many thanks for a lovely stay.

We had a brilliant time staying here. Lovely and spacious, great garden and comfy beds. A big thank you for the champagne for mom's birthday ... it was a lovely surprise!

I liked the Bean Bags and the coloured pens - Holly, age 7
Wonderful house with fabulous decor and brilliant location. Shame the weather didn't live up to expectation - oh well! Had a brilliant first day on the beach and enjoyed the spectacular fireworks in the town. Visited Cabourg and can recommend tea at the Grand Hotel. Merville Battery also worth a visit. Sad to be going home especially now the sun has come out!

We had a week of excellent weather and the grandchildren had great fun indoors and out. The house and garden are very child friendly and it is good to have such a good beach, shops and restaurants within walking distance.

We have had a lovely week here at Le Pin Sable. The house is packed with everything required to enjoy a family holiday. Our grand-daughter loved the sand pit! Weather was excellent too! We can highly recommend the Pizza van "Pizza Copieuse et Goutue" on the main road for excellent pizzas! Also great bread and cakes from the patisserie on the way to the sea front.

Had a wonderful family holiday. Lovely house in an excellent location. Plenty to see and do! Certainly agree with tea at the Grand Hotel @ Cabourg - V nice experience. Weather didn't allow for much time on the beach unfortunately especially as such a beautiful sandy beach. The children absolutely loved it. Sad to leave but maybe we will be able to return.

First of all, I must offer my thanks for the use of you lovely home and your hospitality, we had a great time.
The house is a great spot and only 5 mins from the beach, what a great spot.
The weather was very hot for the whole week and no rain apart from a quick flurry on the Mon Night, so we sat in a bar till it died. The Blue folder is a very good ideal. I left the money with Valerie so thanks for the mates rates.
