Enquire nowThe Yucatan Peninsula / Yucatan region
Climate is tropical year-round with lush vegetation and flowers. Yucatan has its own unique character different from the rest of Mexico. People are very laid-back and friendly. Was center of Mayan culture for hundreds of years and has hundreds of ruins of this ancient civilization including major ones such as Chicen Itza, Uxmal, and Ek Balam. The area is also filled with cenotes--underground swimming holes and rivers, as well as renovated haciendas that used to be plantations to produce sisal rope.
The Merida, Mexico area
Merida is a beautiful colonial city that was once a Mayan city that the Spanish conquistadors built over. It has lovely museums (Macay Modern Art, Anthropology Museum, Folk Art Museum), art galleries, restaurants, handicrafts markets, and fresh food markets. There are free live music and dancing performances all year round at various locations in Centro. The Day of the Dead festivities are typically Mayan.
Near Merida are numerous Mayan ruins like Chicen Itza, Uxmal, and others. There are also other beautiful colonial towns within an hour or 2 of Merida such as the Yellow City--Izamal, Campeche, and Valladolid. Another fun thing is to take a boat ride to view the pink flamingoes that make their home in Celestun or to see the whale sharks off of Holbox or go swimming in the cenotes. You can also visit old haciendas and Spanish colonial convents and monasteries.

The bed and breakfast that Kathleen runs is really excellent. When I stayed there in June I was the only guest. Kathleen offered me valuable information on how to get to places I was unsure of and gave good recommendations for places to eat or to see. The B & B is located fairly near downtown (a bit of a walk) and it is a short bus ride away. The breakfast she prepares is very hearty and one can simply wait until dinner to eat again. If or when I go to Merida again I will certainly try to stay there. I truly enjoyed my stay there. |
