The Lake Como region
Lake Como is in the north of Italy- Lombardy- close to the swiss border ( Lugano) , and 40 km north of Milan.( airports), trendy shopping, historical buildings like Scala, Cathedral, important fashion trade fairs, Formula UNO races in monza.
Lake Como is one of the most beautiful lakes in northern Italy, at 200 m above sea level and it is 50 km long. It is also the deepest lake ( 400 m) , situated at the foot of the alps and surrounded by lovely valleys for driving, hiking, biking. and is favoured by a sunny -nearly windstil alpine climate, with july as the hottest month ( 30 C)
The shores of Lake Como alternate between picturesque villages leaning out on the water, with gravel-sandy or grass rocky beaches, pleasure harbours and water sport areas.
Lake Como is conveniently close to cities worth visiting: Bergamo( città alta) , Venice, Brescia, Verona ( opera) etc.
Menaggio is the largest town of the central lake area. It is also a part of the Triangolo Lariano. The Lario Triangle. Lario is the Latin name of the lake. The triangle connects Menaggio. Varenna and Bellagio. Most possibly the most popular villages. It is also the more "lived in" village of the area with offices, shops, banks, schools and hospital. So not only will you be a part of the tourists staying in the village but you will be surrounded by locals so you will get the feeling of the Italian life style. Menaggio's lake front promenade is one of the nicest of the lake, beautifully taken care of by the council gardeners. Walking the length of the promenade you will reach the largest Lido on the lake, Lido Giardino Menaggio. A great place for a day at the beach, 25mt swimming pool with a kiddy pool as well, large beach with sun loungers, lake access, beach volley, playground and a pizzeria restaurant and brewery to enjoy a meal or an evening.
Menaggio is an old Roman town and has a wonderful antique historic center that begins down at the lake to continue up the hillside to the old walls of the Castel. Unfortunately there isn't much remaining of the original building but the Church of San Carlo is well worth a visit. The best thing to do is to take advantage of the Tourist office in the main Square, Piazza Garibaldi. Here you will find Matilde or Sandra who are very helpful and will give you all the information you could need, timetables, brochures, maps and indications on "what to do today". You will realize that It is well served by public transportation with frequent busses and boats. Como is only 25km away and Lugano 20km, but do remember your passport as it is in Switzerland.
Make sure you visit the surrounding villages, Porlezza, on the way to Lugano and is on Lake Lugano, continuing in this direction you reach ValSolda. A string of villages that have no choice than to creep up the mountain. It is known as the "Piccolo Mondo Antico" the small antique world. Also the Tremezzina area must not be misses. It goes from Tremezzo to Lenno.....wonderful little villages all on the lake with beautiful Villas to visit, Carlotta and Balbianello and just to amble in general discovering the historic centers.
Bellagio and Varenna are surly not to be misses, Bellagio quite touristy but if you appreciate the lanes and historic center it is well worth the visit and not to be missed is the Villa Melzi. Varenna is very lovely, a wonderful lake side promenade, very original and of course the Villa Monastero.
This is just a small number of suggestions, you can discover the rest and if you find something you very much enjoyed on the Lake please let us know as we always appreciate feedback from our guests!
