The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
Lake Como with it's distinctive 'Y' shape as it is today was under a massive ice sheet in the last ice age and was carved out of the mountains due to the slow movement of this enormous glacier. The remnants of which can still be found in Bellagio today. People have lived in the Lake Como area since prehistoric times and became an important communications link between the northern and southern regions.
The romans came here in 196 BC and built the 'Via Regina' which is the same road on the western side today where you will drive through the narrow streets and also connects Italy to Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The Lake Como area became very wealthy under the Romans and became a vital trade route between the Po Valley and the Rhine Valley in Germany thanks to the numerous passes constructed.
Famous towns around the Lake are Bellagio also known as the 'pearl of the lake' and separates the 2 legs of the lake, Menaggio and also Varenna which can be described as 'quaint and rustic'. Regular ferry services from Menaggio link both Varenna and Bellagio and well worth a visit.
Switzerland is also accessible from Menaggio along the road to Lugano (approx 30km) and the famous ski resort of St Moritz is approximately 2 hours drive.
Due to the surrounding mountains, Lake Como has it's own little micro-climate and while temperatures can rise during the summer months, it's not unbearable. Sometimes this can also produce fantastic lightning storms. The lake does have seasonal weather with warm summers, true autumns and spectacular winters. During the winter months, snow covers the many peaks which provides great scenery and ample photo opportunities.
Menaggio / Croce area
Menaggio sits half way up the western shores of Lake Como and is an attractive and thriving town in the summer and a little quieter in the Winter. The heart of the 'old' town gathered around Piazza Garabaldi close to Menaggio's harbour features mostly 19th century buildings in the italian alpine style painted in muted tones.
The higher part of town has a more medieval aspect featuring narrow alleys, steep stairs and stone buildings. The old and 'new', the shops, restaurants, cafe's, public squares and alleyways, the tree shaded lakeshore promenades bordered by flowers and the well kept villas form a wonderful and serene place to holiday.
Menaggio, although peaceful and relaxing, offers plenty of activities or you can simply take leisurely walks through the town and its numerous gardens.
The town has a variety of restaurants as well as general stores and bakeries where you can stock up on snacks. Menaggio has excellent transport links with ferries from both the north and south of the lake and across to Bellagio and Varenna.
For water enthusiasts and families with children head to 'The Lido' (www.lidodimenaggio.com) a modern building where you can plunge into the fresh waters of Lake Como. Water skiers can rent powerboats and skis and opportunity to rent sailing boats and skiffs.
For the more land based holiday maker, the surrounding countryside offers plenty of walking from easy strolls to tough mountain treks. Information on trelks and walks can be obtained from the Menaggio Tourist information (via Garabaldi) and provides good information in English about local activities and sights.
From Menaggio you can take guided trips on the lake (local guides are available) and in particular the northern parts of Lake Como are spectacular. For the golfers amongst you the 'Menaggio-Cadenabbia Golf Club' is located close to Casa Menaggio on the road to Lugano. It is hard to believe that such an excellent golf club exists in such a mountaineous region.
