The Lombardy / Lake Como Area

Menaggio is on lake como halfway the north-west coast, at 35 km from Como City and 25 km from Lugano and 66 km from Milan.

Climate: being on the south side of the alps, we benefit from a sheltered position against cold winds from northern europe. We have a very pelasant temperate climate , spring starts in April and the warmest month is July ( 30C) , but we are favoured with a lovely afternoon breeze, so it is never too hot . Autumn turns into winter and winter into spring, with no big differences in temperature, but the days are of course short. In winter we usually have sunny weather - with now and then a rainy day and it might snow once or twice! We are at 60-90 minutes from the ski slopes ( Madesimo, St. Moritz, Bormio , Gotthard region and San Bernardino. )

Lake Como was already known to the romans, ( roman churches, archeological sites), from the 12th century the area was a way-through fro trade and less peaceful wanderings. From the 18th century wealthy families from milan built their sumer houses and some of them can be visited , famous are beautiful are: villa Carlotta, Balbianello, Melzi)

Menaggio area

Menaggio is a lively little town with a weekly market where the locals from the surrounding mountain villages meet for a chat and bring their goat cheeses for sale. Menaggio has cosy piazza's , narrow streets, trendy shops, good restaurants and pizzeria's and a stroll on the boulevard in the afternoon or evening is a must. On higher grounds is the oldest golf course of Italy with a very tricky green and also with a renowed restaurant where the rich and beautiful meet . Filmstars and footballplayers have discovered lake Como and try to become owner of a lake-side mansion.

In Menaggio you cross the lake and visit Bellagio and Varenna with the ferry, or take a full day ticket and crisscross from village to village.

How to get there

By air: fly to Milan or Bergamo ( low budget) , hire car , drive to Lake Como, Menaggio.
By car: drive through Switzerland , Gotthardtunnel, exit Lugano, follow Italian border, Menaggio
By Car: from east Switzerland or Austria: through San bernardino tunnel or Splugen pass, chiavenna, follow Como.
By car : from south Italy: autostrada towards Milan, Como, Laghi, exit Como nord, follow Menaggio.
