The Lombardy region

The Italian Lakes are a little slice of paradise. Elegant ribbons of blue water stretch out ahead, folded into the sun-baked foothills, with a spectacular back drop of the snow-capped Alps.

Lake Como offers hidden treasures just waiting for the visitor to discover them: charming corners forgotten by time, lakeside villages where nothing seems to have changed for centuries.

It is steeped in history with an immense collection of churches, architectural masterpieces and works of art covering the centuries. The lake is situated in a basin surrounded by wooded mountains, and offers an extremely varied landscape, with its' shores featuring a succession of pastures, and woods as well as harsh and impressive rock formations.

All this alongside elegant, lakeside villas with sub-tropical gardens, which provide a haven of peace and tranquillity and chic resorts such as Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio and Como itself.

Warming, in spriing and graced with natural beauty, the lakes are still a place to draw breath and wonder. Lake Como, oriented north-south, ringed by characterful old villages often wedged onto narrow beaches between rugged cliffs and water. Those classic lake images of flower strewn balconies, Baroque gardens and splendid waterside villas can be found here in abundance. Dotted around and between the lakes are some of Italy's finest art cities, such as Milan, Verona & Bergamo.

The most romantic and picturesque villages on the lake are Santa Maria Rezzonico, Varenna (15 min by ferry) & Bellagio (8 min by ferry), Lenno (visit Villa Balbianello, location for 007's Casino Royale as well as Villa Gaeta, right here in Menaggio) & Laglio (where George Clooney owns Villa Oleandra).

The main road from the property leads directly to the lakeside centre of Menaggio and also to Porlezza on Lake Lugano, so the property is perfectly placed to explore both lakes and also the small nature reserve of Lago di Piano.

Menaggio is one of the famous golden triangle resort towns of Lake Como and offers picturesque cafe lined piazzas and promenades with a wide selection of amenities and activities including a children’s park, a newly refurbished Lido, kayaking and power boat rental, quad bike tours and hiking and cycling routes.

A fast and frequent car and passenger ferry service runs from the town to cosmopolitan city of Como and also the popular resort towns of Bellagio, Varenna and Cadenabbia.

The popular nearby visitor attractions along the central western shore also include the Tremezzina shore with its bustling selection of cafes and restaurants and also Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta with their beautiful heritage and botanical gardens.

Menaggio is a picturesque village nestled in a convenient central position on the lake. It is a historical lake side town with many quaint neighbourhoods which extend north along the lake and up into the green hills and valleys. Menaggio offers stunningly beautiful views of Lake Como and the majestic mountains which surround it overlooked by the Alps to the North.

There is a fine selection of restaurants, delis, fresh grocers and of course delicious gelato and pizza! To keep you moving and fit while on vacation: play a round of golf at the infamous Menaggio & cadenabbia Golf Club, mini golf, hiking trails, mountain biking, free climbing, swimming and a new orienteering field all located in stunning locations -these are just a few possibilities offered to you in and around Menaggio. There is a museum dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci at the new “Lido Giardino” and in the Val Senagra Park, a museum featuring the value of antique buildings, artisan and peasant objects and creations. Other culturally rich events including music, fireworks, public markets and local festivals are to be enjoyed.

Menaggio’s tourist office, situated in the main square, Piazza Garibaldi, offers a great deal of information detailing what’s going on in and around the lakes, sightseeing, history and sporting activities.

During the summer the area boasts fantastic opportunities for many activities including mountain biking, cycling, horse riding, walking, many water sports including kite surfing, fishing, tennis, and of course golf at the historic Mennagio & Cadenabbia Golf Club Ferries run from Menaggio to both the North and South of Lake Come making it an ideal centre for sightseeing. The lovely lakeside and harbour have many cafes where you can sit and relax while watch the world go by.

Outdoor activities abound in this area and are very popular with holiday makers. An 18 hole golf course, mountain biking, water skiing and lots of other sports are all here to be enjoyed by you and your family.

"Great views to parts of the lake from the hillside..."

Simple basic apartment with many trinkets!
Hard to find via directions at night.
They forgot to service the beds with sheets and bathroom with towels, but once we rang up, someone came up to fix it. Left two terrible bottles of wine (maybe off?) for the least the thought was there!
Outlook over the lake was good..between the other houses and hedge/tree next door.
Easy to walk down to the town...10-15 minute walk...leave your car behind as it is hard to get parking. Our car got scratched in the car parking area they suggested to leave the car - there is nowhere to leave off the road.
Spread over three levels..but balcony to sit out on was good at mid level. Front door key hard to get door to open...hopefully they have fix that.
Pretty basic for what you pay for. No soap in the bathroom!
You pay for what you get!! It was cheaper than some others we looked that was probably a reason why!
The office staff were very friendly and helpful when we rang for whatever reason, or when we popped into the office...
