The Scottish Borders region

One of the most beautiful unspoilt areas in the UK, the Scottish Borders has a population of around 100,000 in an area of 1,800 square miles.

Ruined castles, watch towers and forts are found dotted throughout this area of Scotland, all fascinating reminders of the area's turbulent history of defending the Scottish border against the English.

The region offers a wealth of outdoor and rural pursuits to everyone's taste as well as a lot of local history and archaeology from the Roman times to the Border Reivers (local Border town festivals)and modern times.

45 mins into Edinburgh for the world famous Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival.

The Scottish Borders is THE short break destination of Scotland.

The weather, well as they say about Scotland, if you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes!

The ancient and historic town of Melrose, of which Gattonside is part, sits on the banks of the Tweed and makes a great base for any holiday in the Scottish Borders. It has a famous ruined abbey founded in 1136 and this is reputed to be the resting place of Robert the Bruce's heart.

Later, Melrose became a centre of trade, especially for wool and textiles, although not to the extent of some of its neighbouring towns.

Most visitors see the Abbey and surrounding gardens which are run and maintained by The National Trust.

The Commentators House, close by, contains artefacts and carvings which have been found in the area over the years.

The Roman history of the area is brought to life in the Trimontium Exhibition which marks the start of a 4 mile walk of the major Roman sites in the immediate vicinity.

Melrose has an abundance of quality shops, delicatessens, butchers, fishmonger, fruit and veg shop, mini supermarkets, chemist, high class clothes and gift shops, beauty therapy, hairdressers as well as loads of places to eat in hotels, bars or tea rooms with the famous Scottish home baking available just about everywhere!

The Greenyards, home of M.R.F.C and founders of the world famous seven a side rugby founded in 1883, is adjacent to the town centre and hosts “The Melrose 7's” with all its international guests in April every year.(

The lovely local Gattonside playpark is a mere 20 paces away from Tweed Cottage and is in the old village orchard. Gibson Park in Melrose has two well-equipped play parks for kids and 3 all weather floodlit tennis courts are also nearby.

Melrose also has a theatre known as The Wynd which seats 80 people and has productions of theatre, music and arts events on most weeks and there is a four screen cinema in nearby Galashiels showing all the latest movies. (10 minute drive from Tweed Cottage)

Galashiels, 10 minutes away from Gattonside, is where you'll find a Marks and Spencer food hall, Tesco 24 hr + Asda 24hr and some high street chains.

If you are arriving during the summer, you can look forward to experiencing some of the Borders Festivals. From the Common Ridings in Selkirk, Hawick and Lauder to the Braw Lads Gathering in Galashiels and the Beltane in Peebles, many of these festivals originated in ancient times and are still celebrated today.

Alternatively you can experience the Melrose International Pipe Band Championships

There is also the Border book festival in June who takes over the whole town, creating a fantastic atmosphere and brings famous authors such as Michael Palin, Maureen Lipman and Rory Bremner –

If you arriving in the winter, you can look forward to experiencing Hogmanay

Hogmanay is a major festival for Scots and the area in and around Melrose is a great celebration; the town's Pipeband entertains the crowds gathered to watch the firework display at the ancient Mercat cross.

And of course, Tweed Cottage is in the charming and quiet village of Gattonside which lies just across the Tweed from the hustle and bustle of Melrose and boasts 2 prestigious restaurants within a few minutes' walk of the cottage.

Gattonside is a 15 minute walk to Melrose.
