The Scottish Borders region
There is so much to see and do in this beautiful area. Walk the Border hills, or take The Southern Upland or St Cuthbert's Ways. There is riding at Cowdenknowes, just a few miles from Melrose; fishing, of course, not only in the Tweed but in many of the smaller rivers round about; golf at Melrose and Lauder (12m) where you can also visit Thirlestane Castle. Other nearby stately homes of note include Mellerstain House and, of course, Sir Walter Scott's beloved Abbotsford, between Melrose and Galashiels.
The Berwickshire coast can be reached in well under an hour. Visit the sandy beach at Coldingham, or walk the spectacular cliffs at St Abbs ( also one of the foremost diving sites in the country) and see the seabird colonies there. Further up the coast is North Berwick, with the Scottish Seabird Centre, and golfers looking for a real treat can visit Lothian's famous links courses - Gullane, Luffness, even Muirfield itself.
And of course nothing could be simpler than a day trip to Edinburgh, for which you have several options. You can go by car, or take the car to the outskirts and park and ride, or simply catch one of the regular buses which pass through the village.

The Melrose area
Melrose is famous, not only for its ruined abbey and legendary Eildon Hills which rise above the town, but also for the variety of its shops and the quality of its restaurants.
Walkers will be pleased to hear that they are within half a mile of the Southern Upland Way, while St Cuthbert's Way actually starts in Melrose and ends in Lindisfarne. Fishermen have the Tweed within a stone's throw as well as many well-stocked lochs in the vicinity. The 9-hole golf course in Melrose is laid out on the side of the Eildon Hills and is one of many excellent courses in this area. Melrose also has tennis courts in the park and there is riding 4 miles away at Cowdenknowes. Here, too, you are in the middle of rugby country and the Greenyards pitch in Melrose is home to the rugby Sevens game.
For those days when you feel less energetic you can enjoy a visit to one of the many stately homes, ruined abbeys, historic castles, peel towers and lovely gardens, all of which are open to the public. Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott is the closest, only 4 miles away. If you decide to make a trip to Edinburgh why not leave the car at home and take advantage of the regular bus service!

The house is beautiful, everything you would ever need is supplied for you, we were met by Heather, the owner who was charming and informative, living close by if you required anything, you are left to relax and enjoy your stay. Melrose is a lovely town, great restaurants, cafes and Quality shops, we will always slip off the main road in future for a stop and hopefully another stay. |
