The Brittany / Morbihan region
Spring and Autumn have a milder climate than the UK and therefore the days seem longer with evenings that you can still enjoy with the beautiful changing light and scenery. The summers may have hot days but the local woodlands can bring welcome shade away from the beaches and the chance to view the tremendous wildlife.
The area has a wealth of history from the prehistoric standing stones at Carnac to memories of the Second World War at L'Orient. There are pilgrimage sites such as Sainte-Anne-d'Auray. Elements of medieval times still exist at nearby Pontivy (15 mins by car) alos Vannes and Josselin a little further.
Melrand area
The attraction and appeal of the Morbihan is the contrasting landscapes, the large inland sea of the Golfe du Morbihan, the forests and fields, combined with the mild climate and friendly people. There is pleanty to see for all ages and interests, from the most sedate to those sport lovers who want to be active all day.
The Breton tradition of Pardons regularly takes place in the villages where the old religious ceremony and parade is often followed by dancing in traditional costume and local food to enjoy. The local markets take place weekly at nearby Pontivy, Burby and Baud.
Melrand has the 'Village de l'An Mil', a medieval village reconstructed with real livestock and activities for the children. 10 minutes away is St Nicolas des Eaux with a picturesque boat ride available down the Blavet River past the well known Chapelle de St Nicodeme. For the more energetic there is bike hire and cycle paths by the river. The zoo, kayaks, paintball, quads, jet ski and sea life centre are all within a short drive.
