The Yorkshire region
The Yorkshire Dales are internationally renowned, and Coverdale is one of the most picturesque, and peaceful. , It stretches for over thirteen miles, from the bleak beauty of Coverhead in the West, where rivulets cut deep into the peaty moorland, to the small cobbled market town of Middleham to the East - famous for its racing stables and associations with Richard III, once an inhabitant of Middleham Castle.
To the west of Melmerby, the skyline is dominated by the distinctive outline of Great and Little Whernside in the high dale - both very popular day walks. Closer to the cottage, Penn Hill on Melmerby Moor is within easy striking distance, as are the crags of Roova facing you from across the dale. There is also a rich network of drove road that take almost anywhere you can go by car but on foot and in peace and quiet.
The nearby market town of Leyburn has fantastic local produce as well as a a very reasonable Co-op, various boutiques, and a weekly farmers’ market. Leyburn also has its own auction house, its own steam railway, its own pottery factory, its own chocolate factory all of which are open to the public. An excellent playground in Leyburn and a decent public swimming pool in Bedale helps keep the kids entertained whilst Mum and Dad catch a rest.
There are a number of excellent family-friendly restaurants within half an hours drive. We can particularly recommend the following:-
The hamlet of Melmerby itself is also worth spending time in. It is surrounded by rich meadows and pastureland that reach down to the banks of the RiverCover, a stone's throw from Mille House East, and where many a happy afternoon has been spent paddling in the river/skimming stones.
Nearby Aysgarth Falls and Redmire Falls provide well marked and easy walking with good amenities and tourist information. Above Aysgarth Falls sits Castle Bolton, one time prison to Mary, Queen of Scots. Move further North, beyond Wensleydale, and you find dramatic Swaledale with historic Richmond at its head. In neighbouring Wensleydale there's Semer Water, a peaceful lake surrounded by stunning hills. Hawes in the west of the dale is another picturesque market town with lots to see and do.
There are OS maps and walking guides in the house to be used at your leisure.

"A special place"
We had a wonderful family celebration weekend at Mile House East. There were welcome tea and biscuits waiting for us and fresh flowers in a vase. It's a spacious well laid out cottage which was ideal for lots of people. We had extra family for lunch one day and at no point did this lovely house feel crowded. The rooms are charming and feel like a real home, not a rented cottage. As well as a wonderful place to entertain, Mile House East has great walks right from the front door. You don't need to walk far to have amazing views of the North Yorkshire countryside.
Mile House East comes highly recommended.
We are so pleased that you thought so highly of Mile House East and enjoyed its welcoming, homely charm. Thank you very much for taking the time to post such a positive review.
