The Scottish Highlands region
SeaShore House looks out onto Lochewe, the departure point for the Artic Convoys in WW2. At the site of the former Navy base, just 5 minutes from SeaShore House, a gently sloping little beach with fine sand, and a backdrop of the Torridon mountains, provides an unforgettable experience.
A little further are the remnants of the gun emplacements and the anchoring point of the boom net, which protected the arctic convoys.
The road out to Cove on the other side of the peninsula, leads to the Arctic Convoy Memorial and the remnants of a substantial system of gun emplacements and defences. The beach below still has traces of the SS William H Welch, a US liberty ship, which sank here in February 1944.
Poolewe, just 6 miles from SeaShore House, is home to the world famous Inverewe Gardens, which has an interesting shop and a huge cafe.
The community centre in Poolewe runs a ceilidh every Wednesday night and a craft market once a week throughout the summer. They also have a little café, with delicious home baking and fantastic soups.
Gairloch, just 20 minutes away, offers a variety of activities, including whale and dolphin watching trips, sea fishing, horse trekking, golf and has a variety of shops and an interesting museum.
The ancient Torridon mountains are within easy reach of SeaShore House, as are other spectacular Munroes, Corbetts and Donalds. Walking of all varieties and for all abilities abounds on the West Coast, from beach combing to challenging peaks.
The nearby village of Poolewe provides a picturesque and practical starting point for walks for all abilities. There are a variety of walks including woodland and riverside strolls, and a short walk to the ancient Pictish Stone burial ground.
