The Island of Malta region

Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages lead to the main square, which is invariably dominated by the huge baroque church. As the countryside is dotted with medieval towers, wayside chapels and the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum.

The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of over 400,000 inhabitants occupying an area of 316 square kilometers.

Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture. Comino, the smallest of the trio, has one hotel and is largely uninhabited.

With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.

Mellieha

Mellieha was once an isolated 15th century hamlet perched on the ridge overlooking Ghadira Bay.

It was abandoned for a couple of centuries because of its vulnerability to pirate and Saracen attack. Re-inhabited in the early 18th century, it has since developed into a flourishing town though it retains a quaint historic centre with narrow streets and stepped alleys. From the terrace of the Parish Church, there is a panoramic view over Mellieha Bay and the surrounding countryside.

Beneath the church is the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin, a national shrine. A fresco of the Madonna and Child is said to have been painted by St. Luke. This legend has made the troglodyte chapel into a popular place of pilgrimage. The walls are lined with ex-voto offerings and paintings - a testimony to the devotion of the people.

Mellieha today is a modern town noted for its large private villas and houses which have been built on land overlooking the bay. While the town has developed into a resort, it has managed to retain some of its rural character.

"The best apartments in Malta"

This was my 3rd time in Malta. The apartments ticked all the boxes. I thoroughly recommend Kangeroo Valley. Michquella, Maria and Tony live on the upper floor. Their hospitality was superb.

I intially arrived before my husband and didn't want to hire a car Tony and Michquella picked me up from the airport. I need to do a big shop. This was not a problem as Miquella very kindly took me out to do a big shop. If Tony was going out he took me too. I made friends with all the family. Maria is a great laugh and I went shopping with her on one occasion. I also used Drifters Car Hire on rare occasions. They were cheap and professional. The website states car hire needed but if driving is not on the agenda it is easy to go without.

When my husband arrived we went with Maria and Tony to the festival which celebrated Malta's independence of British rule. It was great fun. There was live music and food stalls selling food from many parts of the world.

The pool was lovely and clean as was the apartment. I liked it when I was chilling and Maria would appear with coffee and we would have a good natter. Having said that if privacy was needed, the family respected that.

I have mentioned accessibility it is easy to walk to the beach down a flight of stairs or road. I also walked from the village back to the apatments. I have booked an apartment for next year. My recomendation is A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thank You for your lovely review Gill, We are so glad you enjoyed your stay here. Looking forward to seeing you next year :) Micquella
