The Island of Malta region
Despite its SMALL AREA ,VISITORS TO MALTA find our RANGE OF ACTIVITIES UNBELIEVABLE :) MALTA IS ..........A VERY EXCITING ISLAND.
The Maltese Islands offer an exhilarating contrast of colours: the azure of the Mediterranean, the mellow honey-coloured limestone which characterises the architecture, and clear skies. The Islands are a feast for the senses.
BEST FOR KIDS
Best for animal lovers
Dolphins and sea lions are the stars of the show at the Mediterraneo Marine Park (Bahar ic-Caghaq 2137 2218/www.mediterraneo.com.mt) as they display their acrobatic skills. There is also a parrot show, with these exotic birds showing off their mimicing antics. Another highlight is the chance for adults and children over eight years to swim with the dolphins. The park offers children a fun way of learning about marine life. Open Apr-mid Oct 10am-5pm daily.
Best for Popeye fans
Popeye Village (Anchor Bay, Mellieha 2152 4782/www. popeyemalta.com) is the actual set used for 'Popeye', the 1980s film starring Robin Williams -an entire village of wooden houses, some converted into bars and shops, others equipped with props used for the film. Parts of the film and a background to the set construction are screened in a small cinema and in summer you can take a boat ride around the bay. Open June-Sept 9.30am-7pm; Oct, Mar-May 9.30am- 5.30pm; Jan, Feb 9.30am-4.30pm daily.
Best for cooling off
In the heat of summer, kids will love Splash and Fun Water Park (Coast Road, Bahar ic-Caghaq 2137 4283/ www.splashandfun.com.mt). Large water slides, the new sidewinder, a daily animated programme of games, dances, volleyball and aerobics, a wave pool with massive 1.5m waves and other thrilling water activities. For younger kids, 'Children's Splash Land' has fun features such as arching jets, water guns and a tunnel slide; and for sheer relaxation the 'Lazy River' pool carries you gently through the water on a large rubber tyre. Open Apr-Oct (weather permitting) 9am-7pm daily.
ENJOYING THE NIGHTLIFE
Typical of the Mediterranean lifestyle, the Islanders’ approach to life is to enjoy and celebrate it as much as possible. Nightlife on the Islands is always bustling – even if the vibrant calendar of events is lean during some periods, there are always scores of clubs to visit, excellent wine bars and first-rate restaurants to try.
The Islands have an effervescent calendar of cultural events to see, such as the Summer Malta Arts Festival, the Valletta Baroque Festival, the Opera Festival, the Choir Festival and the International Jazz Festival held in July.
Major music concerts are held during the summer months, past performers include Duran Duran (this year),Sting, Roger Waters, Sir Bob Geldofand Sir Elton John . Organised by individual organisers they attract massive crowds of both tourists and locals alike.
The Maltese Islands have also become a hub for the clubbing scene. Internationally renowned DJs appear (Paul Oakenfold, Erick Morillo, Magda, Tiesto, Van Heill) for guest weekends throughout the year. This scene thrives all year round and is an all-week affair in a variety of venues, from large clubs to quieter bars where some excellent house DJs entertain and the admission is free. The main nightlife clubbing action is in Paceville, on the coast near St. Julians, where the clubs and bars are in abundance.
Classical music is very popular on the Islands and organ recitals take place regularly in Baroque churches. Regular orchestral, soloist concerts and operas take place in some stunning historic venues.
Band music is one of the most popular traditions on the Islands. Every town and village has at least one band club. Band music is taken seriously on the Islands and the highlight of the year for band clubs is the parish festa.
Very unique to the Islands are the lively summer village parish festas. Saints, fireworks, food and fun are all part of this cultural phenomenon – try and catch one as they’re not to be missed.
Theatre is a lively and well-represented part of the local cultural scene. The Baroque 18th century National Theatre makes a wonderful venue for the performing arts. The open-air Shakespeare performed in the Baroque Gardens of San Anton Palace in July is one of the many theatrical highlights. For some fun and great kids’ entertainment, try the Christmas Pantomime.
There is a variety of other sources of nightlife entertainment – try your luck at the casinos, go see a film (blockbuster movies, art house films, re-releases and non-English language films) or do as the Maltese and dine al fresco at one of the romantic palazzos or bustling harbour restaurants.
Everywhere you go, a unique historic sight awaits. Temples, palaces, cathedrals, and forts provide a living history you can almost touch. Sound plays an important part in the life of the Islands. The mix of fireworks and village band marches transforms a summer night into a special memory. The advantage of a stay on the Maltese Islands is that you can experience several holidays in one.
Cuisine here is a taste of the Islands' multicultural heritage. Local restaurants offer a creative selection of tempting fare. After dinner, night clubs, wine bars and casinos beckon with their own brand of excitement.
Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages are crowded with Renaissance cathedrals and Baroque palaces. As the countryside is dotted with the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum.
The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, with Malta 93km south of Sicily and 288km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of 400,000 inhabitants over an area of 316sq km and a coastline of 196.8km (not including 56.01 km for the island of Gozo).
Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture while Comino is largely uninhabited.
With superbly sunny weather, expansive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do. With a little help from any guidebook, captivating places of interest are immediately identified – the world famous Hypogeum selected as a place of World Heritage by UNESCO, prehistoric temples and grand palaces are but a few.
The long relationship between the Islanders and the various nationalities that occupied Malta over the centuries has created a marriage of styles and traditions, giving the Islands a fascinating eclectic culture.

If you intend to drive in Malta please remember that we drive on the LEFT. The island is very well signposted and its many attractions are never more than 20/30 minutes away by car. Despite its small size, Malta offers a diverse range of activities and is ONE OF THE SAFEST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD.
As inviting in winter as it is in summer, the atmosphere in winter is a quieter one of fresh sea air and relaxation. In winter it is the ideal place for a walking holiday, absorbing the sea air and tranquil surroundings.
How to get there
The island's national airline AirMalta offers worldwide flights and Malta is on most major airline's routes. Easyjet and Ryan Air both offer value-for-money flights to Malta.
Directions from Airport: Follow signs to Gozo, keep driving straight past Qawra and Bugibba area. Once you arrive at St.Paul's Bay you will see signs to Mellieha.
In Malta we drive on the LEFT and car hire is a good idea if you wish to spend some of your holiday exploring the island. Despite its small size, Malta offers a wide and varied range of entertainment in addition to being a treasure trove of historical relics - notably the Hypogeum, Mnajdra Temples and (in Gozo) Ggantija Temples.
The bus service in Malta is quite reliable and extensive but on the island sister of Gozo, the bus schedule is sparse.
