The Island of Malta region

The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, with Malta 93km south of Sicily and 288km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of 400,000 inhabitants over an area of 316sq km and a coastline of 196.8km (not including 56.01 km for the island of Gozo). Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture while Comino is largely uninhabited.

In Malta, you'll explore 7000 years of history yet live passionately in the present. You'll span the millennia with an astonishing array of things to discover. And wherever you go, the Islands' scenery and architecture provide a spectacular backdrop. The colours are striking, honey-coloured stone against the deepest of Mediterranean blues.

The Maltese Islands have been described as one big open-air museum. What makes them unique is that so much of their past is visible today. Delve into the Islands' mysterious prehistory, retrace the footsteps of St Paul or see where the Knights of St John defended Christendom.

Malta is holidaying as the mood takes you. And with near year-round sun, you can indulge in outdoor living at its best.

In just 48 hours and a kilometre or two, you can try a new sport, laze on an island cruise and tour the most important historic sites, and still have time to join in the nightlife. That’s the real advantage of a stay here.

With superbly sunny weather, expansive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.

Mellieha is a rural village and tourist resort in the Northwestern part of Malta and derives its name from the Semitic root 'm-l-h' which in Arabic means salt. The name was probably derived from the ancient Punic and Roman salt-terns; historians indicated as lying adjacent to the large sandy bay at the foot of the village. Today, Mellieha is one of Malta's most picturesque tourist destinations. The town centre boasts of its splendid hotels, fine restaurants and traditional cute shops. It has a majestic baroque church (built in late 19th century). Mellieha's main festive season occurs in the first two weeks of September and reaches its climax on the 8th September. During these days various cultural manifestations are held, such as musical concerts, fireworks, folk singing, art exhibitions and the traditional religious procession.

"Excellent choice"

We rented all 3 apartments to accommodate our complete family. We were very impressed by the standard of this spacious accommodation, its cleanliness and situation. Each apartment is individual and very well equipped. Attention to detail is the hallmark of the owners. Plenty of sunbeds around the pool and elsewhere; many places to sit/eat outside; a cubbyhole with pool and beach equipment; loo and shower near pool; a safe in each apartment. We were a big group and we were able to cook and eat together in Unit 3, which has a large, spacious kitchen/dining/living room area. But if you were only renting one apartment, there is plenty of room for privacy too. The villa is near shops and bus route and high up so it is breezy, which is essential when it's very hot. The sandy beach is a good mile away, so a car or bus is needed. The owners are on-hand but not intrusive. I'd strongly recommend this villa - good value for money.

"first class accommodation in first class location"

Loved this villa .Beautiful decor clean and convenient to all the local shops and restaurants.Pool was well maintained and the BBQ always clean and ready for use.No car was necessary as the buses ran frequently and practically to the door.Owners lived on site and we're attentive when needed but respected our privacy throughout the week.WiFi no problem with signal and hot water plentiful.

"Beautiful apartments a pleasure to stay there!!!"

Spacious accommodation, we were in a mixed group of 13 people, aged 26-70. The apartments were newly decorated with contemporary fittings and fixtures. The pool area and grounds were beautifully kept, and the hosts were a delight. Great location very near to restaurants pubs, and a short walk to town and beach. with bus stops and taxis readily available, we could take trips to valletta with no problems.

"Immaculate-stunning accomodation"

The recently refurbished villas were immaculate, even better than we had hoped! We were with a large group of 13 people so the interconnecting doors between 2 of the villas made this ideal. There was plenty of equipment in the kitchens making it perfect for daily cooking on the large built in BBQ by the pool. Beautiful furnishings and furniture made it feel like a home from home. The location was also great for shops and restaurants close by. Free WiFi was particulary handy for uploading photos and keeping in touch with family at home from the villa. We would definitely recommend this for large groups due the flexibilty and set up of the 3 seperate villas-in fact I think we have already enquired about rebooking for next year!!

"A very happy holiday, nothing more to say"

The villa was booked by our friend who found it via an Internet search and I'm so glad she did. As a party of 13 we booked all three available units which made it easier than sharing the outside space with strangers however, there is plenty of room and sun loungers for everyone. The villas themselves were very well furnished with comfortable leather sofas in all three, the furniture was tasteful and up market for a holiday let. There was an attention to detail with the decor and the kitchens were provided with everything you could need including the all important cork screw. The pool was a great asset in the hot weather and there is a loo and shower nearby to save going back to your vila. The owners lived in an apartment above the letting villas and were on hand if required but did not bother us at all during our stay. The villa itself is only a few minutes from the main road where you can catch a bus or go to the Cross Keys for a drink. If I was to make one comment it would be that the Wi-Fi was hit and miss with only one of our party able to get decent access. I would however, recommend this villa!

5 out of 5. What a fab place. We hired all 3 apartments for a 1 week stay for 13 of us (got back yesterday). The apartments have been furbished to a very high standard. The kitchens were better equipped than my own! There wasn't anything we needed that we couldn't find. And for once we had a comfy bed on holiday........ The 2 x 3 bed apartments are interconnecting, so we chose to have the connecting doors unlocked, which turned it into a fab 6 bedroomed villa, with an entertainment area in No3 that easily accommodated us all when we needed it. And No1 was on the ground floor so made it great for during the day & bbq's as we could use the fridge & kitchen without going up & downstairs. A short walk to the main road there are shops/bars etc, and a regular bus service to the rest of the island. We have been going to Malta for several years now, and this is by far the best accommodation we have stayed in. The pool area was great, and we made regular use of the bbq area. Margaret & Jo, the owners were really friendly & accommodating, and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be going heer again & will be recommending it to our friends - it's great, whether you are a large group like us or just going as a couple.
