The Island of Malta region
The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of over 400,000 inhabitants occupying an area of 316 square kilometers. Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture. Comino, the smallest of the trio, has one hotel and is largely uninhabited.
The Maltese are very hospitable - a distinct characteristic of most Mediterranean people. They are extremely extrovert and love to do things in a showy kind of way. If one understands this basic trait of the Maltese character one immediately grasps why village festas in Malta and Gozo are so - to say the least - spectacular.
Many foreigners marvel at the zeal with which the Maltese prepare for their feast. In the scorching summer weather (when temperatures frequently go above 40 degrees C) one is practically dead-tired sitting down in the shade let alone running about from street to street to get things ready. The dry humid climate, however, does not seem to detract the Maltese to celebrate the feast appropriately.
Mellieha is a rural village and tourist resort in the Northwestern part of Malta.
Today, Mellieha is one of Malta's most picturesque tourist destinations. The town centre boasts of its splendid hotels, fine restaurants and traditional cute shops. It has a majestic baroque church (built in late 19th century) and various cultural organizations, including band clubs, sports clubs, an orchestra, various religious societies, a parish community centre and an environmental pressure group.
Mellieha's main festive season occurs in the first two weeks of September and reaches its climax on the 8th September. During these days various cultural manifestations are held, such as musical concerts, fireworks, folk singing, art exhibitions and the traditional religious procession. The town's people, ''Il-Mellehin'', are renowned for their laborious nature, their ironic sense of humour, and their friendliness and hospitality. Those who visit us, no matter where they hail from, do not merely enjoy themselves but feel at home.
As long as Mellieha preserves its great archaeological and historic heritage, its unique natural environment, and its traditions and costumes, its people, "Il-Mellehin", can look forward to a bright future.

"Very nice apartment near the beautiful beach of Mellieha"
We were received very charming and warm by the owner. She had left even some food for us for the beginning of our journey and gave us many good ideas for trips in Malta etc.
The apartment is in a modern house with elevator and a lot of space. You find everything you need, even a washing-maschine, Sat-TV and Wlan-Internet.
We had a very nice holiday in Malta and say thank you very much!

"Ideal for beach lovers"
Very handy for the beach, which was brilliant and only 10 minutes walk to the main sandy beach. Only 3 minutes if you just wanted to dip in the sea!
Nice quiet neighbours, no noise off the the street. Adequate mini-supermarket just a stones throw away.
Good base for boat trips and Mellieha is just 10 minutes to the ferry port for Gozo.
The owners were very friendly and helpful and provided leaflets etc at the apartment.
Just a couple of things that could improve it. Firstly, the shower is very basic and not mounted high on the wall so it's only for hair rinsing really. Secondly, parking was a nightmare over the weekend! Every space around the appartment was taken so I had to park some distance away (the garage was extra to hire). Finally, there wasn't a DVD player. It didn't matter that much but we had brought a couple of DVDs with us to watch in the evening.
One tip we want to pass on, we would recommend hiring a car at the airport to keep it for the duration of the stay.
Overall, we had a great time, and would hope to return. :)
