The Island of Malta region

The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages are crowded with Renaissance cathedrals and Baroque palaces. As the countryside is dotted with the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum.

With superbly sunny weather, expansive beaches, a thriving night-life and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do. With a little help from any guidebook, captivating places of interest are immediately identified – the world famous Hypogeum selected as a place of World Heritage by UNESCO, prehistoric temples and grand palaces are but a few.

The long relationship between the Islanders and the various nationalities that occupied Malta over the centuries has created a marriage of styles and traditions, giving the Islands a fascinating eclectic culture.

Mellieha

The village of Mellieha is located on the Northwest side of Malta. Approaching Mellieha from the sea is often described as a 'breathtaking' experience. The village is elegantly designed to perch atop a picturesque hilltop and flows almost seamlessly to the crystal blue waters and white sand beaches.

Mellieha Bay boasts the largest beach on the Maltese Islands. Because of the way the beaches gently slope out into the crystal clear blue of the Mediterranean Sea, Mellieha is a favourite destination among families for their Malta holidays. Shallow waters with no dangerous undercurrents provide a safer environment for families with small children. On any given day, a number of youngsters can be spotted splashing through the waters with parents keeping watch nearby. This atmosphere creates a great family holiday in Mellieha Malta.

Popeye Village, a short drive from the beach, is one of Mellieha's most popular family attractions. The filming of the 1980 film Popeye provided Mellieha and Malta with an enduring opportunity to entertain future tourists. The set was built using thousands of wooden planks, more than 8 tons of nails and 2,000 gallons of paint. Popeye Village is now home to daily Popeye-related shows and a must-see for families with small children; or even adults who grew up enjoying the adventures of Popeye the Sailor.

Ferry to Gozo

Comino and Gozo are two smaller islands just to the north west of Malta. Gozo is 67 square km with a coastline of 43 km. The ferry trip from the port in Mellieha to Gozo takes about 30 minutes. Gozo is most notably known for its mountains, archaeological finds and ancient structures. A number of natural caves can also be explored throughout the island, and many visitors during their holidays in Malta take a day trip to the islands.

Festivals

Mellieha's main festive season occurs in the first two weeks of September and reaches its climax on the 8th September. During these days various cultural manifestations are held, such as musical concerts, fireworks, folk singing, art exhibitions and the traditional religious procession. The town's people, are renowned for their laborious nature, their ironic sense of humor, and their friendliness and hospitality. Those who visit us, no matter where they hail from, do not merely enjoy themselves but feel at home.

"Large sunny apartment in quiet location with good views and easy parking"

Outside not very attractive, but once inside it is a lovely large apartment with lots of outside space which is a big bonus. Parking in Malta is a nightmare and always being able to park right outside was a big plus. The large terrace leading off the sitting room was great and we used the BBQ and outside table and chairs for all our meals. We particularly liked the huge master bedroom with ensuite which was upstairs, had it's own large terrace and was totally separate from the rest of the apartment .

"Absolutely perfect!"

We had a fantastic time at this clean, modern apartment, it was well equipped and very spacious. The location was great with fantastic views. On arrival we were greeted by a lovely lady who was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. We really could not have asked for more and can't wait to return.

Thank you so much for your review.
