The Island of Malta region
The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, with Malta 93km south of Sicily and 288km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of 400,000 inhabitants over an area of 316sq km and a coastline of 196.8km (not including 56.01 km for the island of Gozo). Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture while Comino is largely uninhabited.
In Malta, you'll explore 7000 years of history yet live passionately in the present. You'll span the millennia with an astonishing array of things to discover. And wherever you go, the Islands' scenery and architecture provide a spectacular backdrop. The colours are striking, honey-coloured stone against the deepest of Mediterranean blues.
The Maltese Islands have been described as one big open-air museum. What makes them unique is that so much of their past is visible today. Delve into the Islands' mysterious prehistory, retrace the footsteps of St Paul or see where the Knights of St John defended Christendom.
Malta is holidaying as the mood takes you. And with near year-round sun, you can indulge in outdoor living at its best.
In just 48 hours and a kilometre or two, you can try a new sport, laze on an island cruise and tour the most important historic sites, and still have time to join in the nightlife. That’s the real advantage of a stay here.
With superbly sunny weather, expansive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.
Mellieha is a rural village and tourist resort in the Northwestern part of Malta and derives its name from the Semitic root 'm-l-h' which in Arabic means salt. The name was probably derived from the ancient Punic and Roman salt-terns; historians indicated as lying adjacent to the large sandy bay at the foot of the village. Today, Mellieha is one of Malta's most picturesque tourist destinations. The town centre boasts of its splendid hotels, fine restaurants and traditional cute shops. It has a majestic baroque church (built in late 19th century). Mellieha's main festive season occurs in the first two weeks of September and reaches its climax on the 8th September. During these days various cultural manifestations are held, such as musical concerts, fireworks, folk singing, art exhibitions and the traditional religious procession.

"Lovely apartments, friendly hostess"
Apartments were spotless with great facilities and decor. We were impressed from the minute we walked in the door, great size rooms and good water pressure in showers (important for us with kids!) and faultless wifi.
The pool was fun, and you could easily walk to the nearest supermarket and restaurants nearby within 5 minutes.
You'll probably need a car for longer journeys, although again this was done for about €30 a day, and we could explore the entire island from here (including Gozo).
Would definitely recommend.

"Christmas in Malta"
We were a party of seven and hired two of the apartments for a week around Christmas. Before arrival Margaret helped with the preparation and got us a pickup at the airport. She was always willing to assist and give advice on what to do and among other things she got us a tour guide that took us on a very nice tour around the Island. The apartments were nice and comfortable, the Wi-Fi was good and satellite television with endless channels for all age groups.
The Villa Margherita is well positioned and we never felt we needed a car. In a few minutes walking distance you find shops, restaurants and bars. A bus stop is also nearby and it is really easy and inexpensive to use the buses to commute around the Island.

"Nice apartment in a quiet location, close to the village and public transport connections"
We truely appreciated Margaret's hospitality and kindliness. The apartment is very well kept and spacious. It's easy to reach the sights and other locations on the island by public transport and it's in the nice and not utterly touristic village of Mellieha.

"A place to relax, to explore and to enjoy."
Our three bedroom apartment was clean, comfortable and adequately equipped
Travelling with 4 children aged 10 through 17, we were able to cook and enjoy family meals together both inside and outside.
The only exception perhaps was if we needed to all be sat in the living room as there was not enough sofa space for six of us. Not a problem in the height of summer as sitting outdoors would be normal, but in the cooler evenings of early April, we would all need to sit indoors which meant some of us having to sit on dining chairs
Our host was friendly, pleasant and generally unobtrusive, but there if needed.
Whether relaxing by the pool or venturing further afield, the villa is ideal and we did both.
Personally, I would recommend hiring a car though there were plenty of buses to take you about close by, as were shops, bars and restaurants.
