The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region
Due to the microclimate in this region, we are blessed with an exceptional number of sunshine hours per year, making it the second sunniest region in France. Spring comes early, Summer temperatures can reach in excess of 30 degrees and Autumn is still warm enough for a quieter main holiday. This is the perfect choice for a holiday - something for everyone! The white sand and romantic islands of the Atlantic Coast are about an hours' drive; the spectacular "Green Venice" (Marais Poitevin) is only 50 minutes away as is the Futuroscope theme park (near Poitiers) in the other direction. Cognac is only a short drive and has several distilleries offering guided tours. In summary, we have wildlife parks, chateaux, hilltop fortress towns and roman history abound. This area is also ideal for bird-watchers since there are many rare species of birds of prey to be found here.
Melle / Lezay area
You cannot afford to miss the market in Lezay every Tuesday morning, selling everything from local fresh produce to shoes to livestock. The nearest supermarket is also located in Lezay, as well as a post office, banks, chemists, doctors, etc. In the town there is also a beautiful park with tennis courts and an open-air swimming pool (open July & August only). Canoeing & swimming available at the lake in Lambon. Melle is famous for its' silver mines and is a very pretty town with several nice places to eat. For history lovers, we have the archaelogical dig and museum at Rom (4kms) virtually on the doorstep. In the opposite direction are Chaunay, Couhe, Vivonne and Poitiers all offering shops, markets, restaurants and interesting architecture.
How to get there
Located in Messe, a village in the Charente region of mid-west France. Approx. 5 miles from Lezay town and 10 miles from Melle town. Due to the rural location, a car is needed. You can't walk to the shops or bar/cafe from the property. There are several budget airlines flying direct from the UK to various airports in the area: Ryanair - Birmingham to Poitiers; East Midlands to Limoges or Nantes; Stansted to Angouleme, La Rochelle, Limoges, Nantes or Poitiers; Liverpool to Limoges or Nantes; Dublin to La Rochelle or Nantes; Bournemouth to Nantes. Easyjet - Bristol to La Rochelle; Gatwick to La Rochelle or Nantes. Flybe - To La Rochelle from Birmingham, Manchester or Southampton; To Limoges from Manchester, Newcastle or Southampton. All the airports have car hire facilities. Poitiers is only 30 mins drive away, Angouleme about 1 hour, La Rochelle and Limoges 1 hour 30 mins and Nantes about 2 hours.

Loads of fun to be had with this traditional French game and "friendly" competitions organised if enough interest is shown. Boules sets available for loan if you don't have your own. Indoor games and outdoor toys available to borrow. A dartboard is also provided for your entertainment. Laundry facilities available with washing machine and tumble dryer (chargeable) across the courtyard. A second gite is located a few yards away in the courtyard together with the owners' farmhouse. A small campsite (Camping a la Ferme) for touring carvans, motorhomes and tents is located in the nearby orchard with its own bathroom facilities near the car park. Due to our proximity to the N10 (7kms), we are ideal for stopovers when travelling to or from the South of France, Spain or Portugal.
