Hideaway Cottage
About the home
The old farmworkers cottage has been tastefully renovated to provide an open plan kitchen/lounge and dining area on the ground floor. The original stone fireplace features a wood-burning stove. Cosy sofas provide relaxed seating in the lounge, maybe to watch a DVD or listen to some music. A dining table and chairs fit nicely by the window for you to enjoy the beautiful sunsets. Alternatively, you can dine al fresco in the garden at the side of the cottage and sample the excellent local food and wine.
The main attraction is the peace and tranquility of the surroundings which enable you to de-stress, relax and re-charge your batteries. SPECIAL DEAL IF YOU BOOK BOTH OUR GITES AT THE SAME TIME - SEE OUR WEBSITE FOR DETAILS.

The above-ground pool measures 7.5m x 3.5m and is for fun rather than serious swimming. It has a raised wooden deck around one side to make access easier. Pool towels are provided.
Sun-loungers, tables, chairs and parasols are provided near the pool on a gravelled terraced area. A boules court can also be found in this area. A second gite is located a few yards away in the courtyard together with the owners' farmhouse. Enquire nowThe Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region
Due to the microclimate in this region, we are blessed with an exceptional number of sunshine hours per year, making it the second sunniest region in France. Spring comes early, Summer temperatures can reach in excess of 30 degrees and Autumn is still warm enough for a quieter main holiday. This is the perfect choice for a holiday - something for everyone! The white sand and romantic islands of the Atlantic Coast are about an hours' drive; the spectacular "Green Venice" (Marais Poitevin) is only 50 minutes away as is the Futuroscope theme park (near Poitiers) in the other direction. Cognac is only a short drive and has several distilleries offering guided tours. In short, we have wildlife parks, chateaux, hilltop fortress towns and roman history abound. This area is also ideal for bird-watchers since there are many rare species of birds of prey to be found here.
The Melle / Lezay area
You cannot afford to miss the market in Lezay every Tuesday morning, selling everything from local fresh produce to shoes to livestock. The nearest supermarket & petrol station are also located in Lezay, as well as a post office, banks, chemists, doctors, etc. In the town there is also a beautiful park with tennis courts and an open-air swimming pool (open July & August only). Canoeing & swimming available at the lake in Lambon. Melle is famous for its' silver mines and is a very pretty town with several nice places to eat. For history lovers, we have the archaelogical dig and museum at Rom (4kms) as well as the Commonwealth War Graves. In the opposite direction are Chaunay, Couhe, Vivonne and Poitiers all offering shops, markets, restaurants and interesting architecture.

A gorgeous cottage in a lovely quiet area, the accomodation was just amazing, facilities all brilliant, Steve and Tracey were wonderful owners who could not be more helpful or approachable, the whole area was just what we wanted for a quiet and romantic getaway in the country side with lovely local french markets in local villages in the week. |

Wonderful Hideaway Cottage. We've been at most times of the year and it is wonderful in all seasons. Everything you need downstairs, including woodburner for cool Autumn and Winter visits. Upstairs bedroom, ensuite shower and just one beam to duck below. This is a French institution. Comfortable and cosy. Barbecues throughout summer, after a dip in the pool; log fires, candlelight and casseroles in winter, all helped along with the essential red wine. Tracey and Steve are wonderful hosts and will help in any way possible, but not intrusive. We've become very good friends. Evenings in summer are spent outside: take part in the family friendly quiz, boules tournament or just chillin'. Winter evenings by the log fire where me and my wife learned to talk to each other again. Logs, wine, good company and enjoying life at a slower pace. I'm sure the sun stops shining, but that's probably only at night. The area is very rural and tranquil, the nights are dark, and there are more stars out there than you could ever imagine. Sunflowers, corn, local farmers on the chasse, Tuesday morning market in Lezay. Styles you haven't seen since your granny wore them, but the atmosphere is so French. Local attractions for the children at Valley des Singes (monkey valley), Futuroscope outside Poitiers, Poitiers itself, Parthenay, Confolens, the Marais Poitevin where you can rent a boat and paddle along the wooded canals, La Rochelle, and not least the Ile de Re. The area , the way of life, the relaxation, the sunshine. This is France. Tracey and Steve and their wonderful Hideaway Cottage are in the middle of all this. All these places to visit in no more than 75 minutes. It may not be perfect, but for a week or two it's pretty close. |
