Casa Azul, an authentic berber style 3 bedroom village house nestles in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Near Mecina Bombaron, one of the whitewashed villages of high eastern Alpujarra, it has spectacular views of Sierra de Gador & the Contraviesa. The house flows over five levels which defy logic like the surrounding olive groves. A unique tardis-like building organically created over hundreds of years with cherry beams, slate ceilings & tiled floors.
There is plenty of room for six guests to spread out or meet up communally. A spacious top level with beautiful panoramic mountain views links open and covered terraces with a cosy lounge and funky kitchen..The whole house has a simplistic charm and is decorated with bright fabrics, up-cycled furniture and quirky features.
The three bedrooms have distinctive characters with soft cotton bedding, thick blankets and hand-stitched giant bed canopies in the summer. The two double rooms have private terraces leading to a sun deck, splash pool and shady, vine covered garden bursting with flowers, birds & wildlife.
Relax in a hammock, watch the goats pass by or practice your Spanish with the locals. They are very friendly and encouraging. Enjoy a variety of local walks, the best tapas in the area or buy tasty supplies from the local markets. Miguel, el panadero delivers bread daily and fresh goat's milk can be arranged with Juan, the local goat herder. Guests can sample home-made bread, chutneys and marmalade. In summer, we harvest almonds, grapes, figs & pomegranates in winter oranges, lemons & olives for oil.
Mecina Bombaron has three food shops, pharmacy, bank and two excellent bars that serve fabulous pizza and traditional dishes- pork ribs cooked in honey. They also have a good selection of wines with free tapas.
Children's workshops - Circus skills in the garden, knitting or cooking are available for an extra fee. Traditional Thai massage/ oil massage & yoga also available at the house.

The Andalucia region
Andalucia has a rich & diverse variety of wildlife. Its climate almost guarantees sunshine during the summer months. The Alpujarras are a series of high villages that cling to the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada & face out across the Mediterranean to the Atlas mountains of Morocco.
The Sierra Nevada is home to mainland Spain's highest peak " Mulhacen " 3481 metres. Trevelez the highest village in Spain located at 1475m is famous for producing air cured ham (Jamon Serrano).
A day trip to Granada city & the splendid world heritage site " The Alhambra " with lavishly decorated palaces & irrigated gardens is highly recommended. Walk around the Albayzin, a tangle of sloping streets with sheer walls that hide Carmen houses with secret internal gardens.
The different seasons:
WINTER - The first settling of snow on " Mulhacen " (mainland Spain's highest peaks). The laden orange trees & the auburn spheres of the persimmons. The sweet smell of almond woodsmoke that fills the air.
SPRING - Almond blossom & azul blue skies. The gentle drone of bees. Spectacular wild flowers such as poppies, roses and lavender. Fabulous birds include house martins, crested lark, hoopoe, bee-eaters, golden oriole and Bonelle's eagle are often spotted within walking distance to the house. Fantastic temperatures for walking the GR7 (Tarifa - Cyprus)GR142 - The Alpujarra route or GR 240 The panoramic route "Sulayr" The mountain of the Sun. The Medival route PR-A299
SUMMER- The hot sun bakes the ground. The air is scented with wild lavender, thyme and rosemary. Sitting with your feet in a local spring cools you down. The neighbouring village of Yegen was the home of Gerald Brenan. He was famous for writing South of Granada & The Spanish Labyrinth.Chris Stewart's "Driving over Lemon's" "The Parrot in the Pepper Tree" gives an entertaining account of living in this area.
AUTUMN- The poplar trees are beginning to turn bright yellow. Harvest time begins. Almonds are gathered & red peppers are strung up to dry against the whitewashed walls. Tomatoes & figs are dried on the flat roofs. Mecina Bombaron has a fiesta to celebrates its ancient chestnut trees.

"Amazing house and exciting experiences in the beautiful Alpujarra"
With sun during the day and a cool evening breeze our trip to Casa Azul felt fabulously refreshing.
Great food, milking goats, flamenco dancing and circus skills were all part of our exciting stay. Bethan's local knowledge and suggestions meant we were never stuck for things to try!
The house has been lovingly and artistically restored and has everything a family or couple seeking a quiet retreat might want. We loved the decor, especially the guerrilla knitting on the terrace chairs.
We sunbathed on the terrace with its small plunge pool to cool off and in the afternoons swam at the lido a short drive outside the village.
Arriving, we were met by the owner at a mutually convenient place and time, although it is worth making sure you have the latest update on your satnav as there is a new, easy to drive road which may not be on older maps.
A day trip to the Alhambra was well worth it; an early start (8 am) allowed us to be there in time for a little sightseeing and lunch before our afternoon advance booking.
Overall we highly recommend Casa Azul to taste the slightly more exotic flavour of this beautiful region.
Thank you for your lovely review it was a real pleasure having you and your family come to stay at the house. I'm so happy you had such a entertaining time. Best wishes Bethan

"Peace, beauty, fantastic location, great walks, fabulous food."
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Caza Azul, walking down to the local spring to fetch clear cold refreshing water, all the locals say their village spring water is the best! But so did each village or town that we visited in this area! We went to local food markets and admired the amazing local produce, and ate lots of it. Caza Azul provided everything we needed to make our stay perfect, we cooked, we sunbathed, we rested. We walked up the footpath behind the house to the local bar and enjoyed superb "summer wine" a sort of refreshing sangria and delicious complementary tapas. The information included at the house gave us plenty of interesting days out. I would highly recommend this property.
Thank you for your lovely review we are so happy you enjoyed the house and the walking.

"So Relaxing - we are going back this Summer!"
Nestling in the top of a valley in the mountains is Caza Azul, home to Jim and Bethan Jennings - Brown. After a few hairpin bends you arrive at their front door to be greeted by a cool and beautifully decorated house, full of character and charm.
There are 3 good sized bedrooms and our kids were thrilled to have a room each especially our daughter Bethany who had a princess bed. Through the house and up the stairs is the warm kitchen, absolutely the heart of this house. Leading out to a balcony which looks over the very welcoming plunge pool and the courtyard garden, complete with figs and grapes.
Golco is a small village with plenty of atmosphere. Jim showed us where to fetch water in the morning. This was from one of the many natural springs which run down the mountain and can be drunk straight from the ground. Due to this spring the bottom of the valley is incredibly lush with lots of villagers farming small plots of fruit and vegetables. So there is a lovely walk down through the valley which we did at dusk - beautiful.
The first thing we did when we arrived was very little, Caza Azul is the perfect place to do nothing. We read, taught the kids how to play Backgammon and had long breakfasts with spanish coffee. We then discovered the local public swimming pool - which is literally on the side of a mountain. It is only a 10 minutes drive from the house and has incredible views. It also has a bar and little cafe.
The roads around Golco are fantastic for cycling and Jim was able to advise my husband on the best route to cycle, with fantastic hills, both up and down, surrounded by this stunning scenery.
Jim and Bethan are fantastic hosts, after welcoming us they let us settle in, as they retreated to their basement flat. They understand the need for privacy, but are also on hand with useful local information and tips for days out. Bethan is a trained massage therapist, which was an unexpected treat.
The local town has good restaurants and we did some very good animal impersonations to try and communicate what was in the food as my husband and I do not speak Spanish and the menus had no translation. There are also amenities such as grocery stores, pharmacy and a cash point.
The people of Golco are very friendly and while we were there, there was a fiesta when the whole village brought tables and chairs to the square and shared a meal together which then turned in to dancing and singing. This is a lovely community with some great characters. Our children were also welcomed by the local Spanish children even though they do not speak Spanish and they are very excited that we are going back this year.
We fell in love with this place and have already booked in for this year.
Thank you for your wonderful review. We are very happy you had such a nice time and we are looking forward to seeing you this summer.
